The Mercury Cars Guide : April 10th 2010
18--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, April 10, 2010 Custom caravan suits the purpose PROTOTYPE: The Airflow caravan is designed for off-road travel. T OOWOOMBA caravan company JPC Engin- eering is making a single-axle off-road ver- sion of its versatile, aerodynamic Airflow caravan. The vehicles feature a rear wall which opens completely to allow bicycles, motorcycles and, in one case, even a small Jeep, to be parked inside. Airflow caravans also have a short draw bar to close the gap to the tow vehicle to reduce turbu- lence, improve aerodynamics and reduce fuel consumption. The 4.2m, single-axle caravan is being customised for a Canberra family with two children who want to travel with bicycles. It will open to 6m, have height- adjustable suspension and will be the prototype for a series of off- road caravans. JPC Engineering owner Justin Clarke says the caravan will cost about $45,000, depending on cus- tomer options. ''This is the first single-axle van we have built. It is the basis of the new off road van we are building in the next few months,'' he said. ''We have kept the overall width similar to a large 4x4 vehicle and with the height-adjustable suspen- sion you have the ground clear- ance when you need it and the low centre of gravity and the handling on the highway.'' The caravan will feature a ''yatch bed'' across the front., two- door fridge, pantry and a bench seat that folds to double bunk beds. Outside there is a slide-out kitchen. Airflow caravans are made with a steel chassis, timber frame and aluminium cladding walls. The interior fittings are manufactured at Caboolture by a specialist company. Clarke says the caravan can be adjusted by remote control from 650mm to 270mm for ease of access, or raised to help negotiate obstacles or matched to the tow vehicle ground clearance to im- prove under-body aerodynamics and create a lower centre of gravity for road-holding stability. Suspension also can be adjusted separately. airflowcaravans. com.au Go for commercial biofuel AIR ISSUES: One reader has had repeated trouble with her 2004 VW Golf. email@example.com with GRAHAM SMITH Q I am thinking of using biofuel in a new common rail diesel engine, it will be either a Toyota or a Mitsubishi. Do you know of any reason why I should not do so? Brian Baker email If you re talking a commercially available bio-diesel then I can t see any reason not to use it, but if you do I would replace the fuel filter after the first tank of fuel to get rid of any residue the bio- diesel might have leeched out of the system. After that you would only need to make regular filter changes. If you are talking home- made fuel you re on your own and I would be careful about using it. Q The paint protection on my 2003 Holden Calais is peeling off and I want to get rid of it all. What can I use? Rob Andrews Caulfield, Vic If it is a problem with the paint protection you could use a paint cleaner, which should clean it off, and then polish the car. But I suspect it could be a delaminat- ing clear coat that s your problem and not the protection coat at all. I would suggest you take it to a body shop and have them cast their expert eye over it. Q Referring to recent reports in your column about the problems with Nissan Navara clutches, I can add that my D40 Navara STX has had two clutch failures. The first one was at 9000km, the second at 22,000km. Nissan would not replace the second clutch free, and so I am taking them to the Consumer, Trade and Tenancy Tribunal. Stephen Drane email We ve had numerous reports from owners following this issue, enough to suggest to us the clutch in the Navara is a problem. Anyone thinking of buying one, and planning to tow with it, should consider their purchase. Q In the six years I have owned my 2004 VW Golf 2.0-litre Sport Auto I have rep- laced four lambda probes and air mass flow meters. VW states the problem is due to my short distance driving and that Aust- ralian petrol is not the same standard as European! I always use top-grade unleaded. As I enjoy the Golf I am thinking of buying a new model, but before I do I would like to know if VW has corrected or improved the tech- nology with respect to the lambda probes and air mass flow meters, so that I can feel confi- dent of buying without ongoing expensive problems. Glenyce Brookfield email VW s advice to you is rubbish --- they sell the Golf in this country and they have to make sure it is suitable for our climate. I wouldn t accept this advice. As for the new model I can t say but I doubt there has been any change. Q A company has ap- proached me and offered to modify my 2003 BA Falcon Futura to run on gas so I can take advantage of the government rebate. They assured me that my car could be modified, but the dealer told me when I purchased it that it couldn t because of the valve seats being soft. Is it safe to convert to dual-fuel and what are the repercussions if any I might face down the track? Dennis Lucas email Ford will tell you that because it wants to sell you a dedicated E-Gas Falcon, which has harden- ed valve seats, valves and even special con rods to handle LPG, but there are thousands of Fal- cons running around with non- factory dual-fuel systems fitted. In short it can be done, and successfully. But I would be suspicious of anyone approach- ing me with an offer to convert my car, and I would suggest you check their bona fides carefully. I would also suggest you seek out the expert opinion of recognised specialists in the field to get advice you can rely on. Motor Cycles TRACK BIKE 00-R6 $3,500 ono.
