The Mercury Cars Guide : April 17th 2010
4--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, April 17, 2010 Confidence in Toyota brand bounces back SWIFT ACTION: Toyota's quick response in recalling Prius Hybrids has helped to reclaim client confidence. David Buttner Recovering your company image after recalls is tough, but Toyota, who has mass recalls on their Prius Hybrid, is determined to win back their customer's respect. Stuart Martin reports We instituted a recall in Australia on Prius on the back of two complaints but in line with the global recall. We moved quickly to reprogram the 2300 cars affected in Australia' CUSTOMER confidence in the Toyota brand has re- turned to pre-recall levels, according to the com- pany's customer research. Toyota Australia sales and market- ing executive director David Buttner said the company had suffered a knock to customer confidence amid the global recalls, which included the local recall of its Prius hybrid. ''We monitored consumer senti- ment and during the peak of the media activity there had been some dimunition in a number of those measures, but from about three weeks ago we saw the measures starting to recover --- every measure now is back at the level it was prior to the global recall situation and the surrounding publicity. ''That's positive because the brand reputation is the most sacred thing you can have,'' he said. Mr Buttner said the company started the recall and its customers reacted well to Toyota's process of fixing the problems. ''We instituted a recall in Australia on Prius on the back of two com- plaints but in line with the global recall. We moved quickly to repro- gram the 2300 cars affected in Australia.'' Mr Buttner said he believed all cars --- not just Toyota's --- would become safer as a result of the Toyota US safety issues. ''It's fair to say all cars will become safer and be put under much greater scrutiny through the design and engineering technical phases of the vehicle's development,'' he said. While not diminishing the serious- ness of the problems experienced by the brand in the US, Mr Buttner said the brand had sold 21 million ve- hicles --- wearing Toyota, Lexus or Scion badges --- since 2000, with 3300 complaints being lodged over unin- tended acceleration. Mr Buttner said processes were now in place to examine the prob- lems and prevent them from happen- ing again. Lee Sauerwald, 40, and wife Mi- chelle, 39, said they were not de- terred from buying a Hybrid Camry. ''You get more nervous when companies don't do recalls when perhaps they should,'' they said.
