Q THREE years ago I had my 2006 Ford Fairlane fitted with a Parnell dual-fuel system by my local Ford dealer. Since then it stalls without notice coming into round- abouts, at intersections, turning to the right with traffic ap- proaching. It always happens while turning the vehicle. It has been back to the Ford dealer numerous times under war- ranty, and since the warranty has run out, the last two visits have cost me $360 and I do not wish to pay any more. I have had the converter replaced, and an anti-stalling device fitted. The longest time between episodes was about nine months, but then it can happen twice in two days. I am frightened to drive it on gas and now only drive it on petrol, which defeats the pur- pose of having the gas installed. Could you please help me with this problem? Ross Foot Speers Point, NSW THREE years is a very long time to put up with a problem like this, which is very dangerous as you say. The Parnell system is a well-known one that has been widely used over the years, so there shouldn t be any problem with that. It would be worth checking the water flow to the converter, which can freeze up if there isn t sufficient hot water flowing through it, but I would also question the com- petence of the Ford dealer if they couldn t fix a problem like this in three years. You could also phone Parnell LP Gas Systems direct (03 9315 1699) and enlist their assistance. I am sure they would be happy to help get your car running the way it should. Q CAN you point me to any recent reviews of sequen- tial gas injection systems that have been fitted to the 1999 VT SS Commodore I could read? Wayne McVay email I M not aware of any reviews of such installations you could refer to. Vapour-injection sys- tems weren t around when the VT was launched, so it s unlikely to have been fitted with them. Best to talk to the system manufacturers directly who should be able to put you in touch with owners who have had the conversion done. Q Do you think the VS HSV GTS is a good invest- ment? If so what value do you think it might reach? Rodney Tueno email IT S not possible to say for sure, but the HSV GTS has the sort of credentials needed to become collectible one day. It was a limited edition, had a factory- modified Holden V8 motor with heaps of grunt and looked the part with a nice body kit and neat interior. How fast it might climb in value is anybody s guess --- that s determined by the market, which has been flat for a year or two and will probably remain so while buyers are cautious about spending their money in these financially troubled times. Same goes for the value it might achieve. Q RECENTLY, as I ap- proached a speed indi- cator on the freeway with my car s speedo on 100 km/h exactly it indicated I was doing 94 km/h. Later, when passing road works with a temporary speed limit of 60 km/h a trailer- mounted indicator showed I was doing 64 km/h, but when returning through the same roadworks later I was shown as doing 56 km/h. Same experi- enced driver, same car, two- years-old, original size tyres in good condition and recom- mended pressure plus two psi. I know that the ADR only requires an accuracy of 10 per cent, but is there any accuracy require- ment for these speed indi- cators? John Cheriton Cockatoo, Vic THE overhead speed indicator is likely to be the best one to rely on. That it showed your speedo was reading fast by about six per cent, comfortably within the maximum allowed 10 per cent, suggests it was reasonably ac- curate. I wouldn t rely on the indicators at the roadworks. Q ABOUT three months ago I replaced the front brake pads on my 10- year-old Mercedes-Benz C240. I beveled the edges to avoid them squeaking, but they still make a noise. What would you recom- mendIdotofixit? Ewald Lerche email TRY beveling them again and see if that makes a difference.
