The Mercury Cars Guide : April 24th 2010
Saturday, April 24, 2010 Classifieds 62 300 400 carsguide.com.au ---3 Beaut idea for ute fans THE Ute of Repute, UTEopia, U Beaut and Pride of the Plains are just some of the quirky names suggested for Deniliquin's most famous ute. They are among almost 1000 suggestions already put forward to name the town's famous ute on the pole'' --- a WB V8 Holden ute. The iconic Australian car has sat on a 6m pole in the centre of Deniliquin since 2000 but until now it has never been formally named. Deni Ute Muster organisers and the Deniliquin Council are running a competition to name the ute ahead of this year's ute muster on October 1 and 2. Rural and city folk, including politicians like the Federal Nationals Leader, Warren Truss and the Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, have sent in suggestions. Truss' suggestion was Ute of Repute and Albanese came up with Pole Position. V8 Supercar champion Will Davison reck- ons Red Dragon would be a good name. The competition is being run by an auto industry magazine published by the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce. The Deniliquin Council will determine the winner. The southern NSW town is regarded as the ute capital of the world. In 1999 it entered the history books claiming the Guinness World Records title for the largest parade of utes in the world. Nearly 3000 drivers took part in the parade. NEIL McDONALD as a handy as a handbag BACK IN BLACK: Michelle Moore with the SV6 Holden ute she shares with her husband. 'Females these days are becoming more involved in handyman stuff around the house and find the need for a practical vehicle' ''I started going to a lot of rodeos when I was younger and everyone had them,'' she says. ''But I'm not real girly; I was always one of the blokes.'' But don't tell beekeeper Kathryn Niklaus, of Beechworth, Victoria, that utes aren't for women. ''Get real. That is the dark ages. Come on,'' she says. ''The 4WD utes may be a little bit high for the average woman, but they still are good for cargo space.'' She also reckons utes are ''cool'' as well as practical. Colleen Rennie of The Rock, NSW, says utes are not made only for men. ''I've never had anyone challenge me on the male ute thing,'' she says. ''Women should be able to drive anything they want; utes don't just cater for men. ''I prefer them because I do a lot of travelling and I get everything I need in it.'' Ms Tynan says their dealers are witnessing more women being involved in the purchasing process. ''We have many female Pik-Up drivers who do a range of jobs, anything from farming to bird breeding, where space and durability is the key,'' she says. ''Many of our male buyers also see their purchase very much as a joint decision, taking into account what their partners will appreci- ate. Holden spokeswoman Emma Watts said they did not have any specific evidence showing whether women were buying utes in greater numbers. ''Anecdotally, we understand that over the past 10 years there has been a marginal increase in the number of female ute purchasers,'' she said. Ute owners will gather in Caboolture from April 30-May 3 for the Beaut Ute Competition at the annual Urban Country Music Festival. The utes will compete for trophies for best urban ute, tradie's ute, most feral ute, best restored ute and best chick's ute at Centenary Lakes. Registration is from 7.30-9.30am on the Saturday with utes on display from 8am. Judges announce the winners at midday and the utes will parade through the streets at 1pm. Ute entry is $20 or $25 for a double category entry.
