The Mercury Cars Guide : April 24th 2010
Saturday, April 24, 2010 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com .au —23 Targa drivers make for start line ON YOUR MARKS: Tasmania’s premier motoring event, Targa Tasmania, starts in George Town on Tuesday. with JAMES BRESNEHAN T ASMANIA’S tarmac roads are about to come to life next week with the 19th running of the annual Targa Tasmania. About 270 modern, classic and historic cars will line up for the start of the event in George Town on Tuesday afternoon, with a prologue stage to determine starting positions for the five days that follow. While slightly down on the record field, the start list is packed with talent and a brilliant array of cars. Some of the world’s leading car manufacturers have committed en- tries to this year’s Targa, including Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Skoda, Toyota, Audi, Hyundai, Porsche and Lamborghini. Targa Tasmania provides some- thing for everyone. Those following the event on a casual basis will recognise that the battle for outright victory is a fight between supercars such as the Porsche 911, the Lamborghini Gallardo Superlegerra and the Nissan GT-R . For those with a keen interest in motorsport, their enthusiasm will go a lot deeper. The classic and showroom compe- titions will also be eagerly fought, highlighting that Targa Tasmania is an event where anybody, in just about any car, can compete. The sometimes fickle weather can play just as much a part in the overall result as the actual performance of the cars and drivers. The Modern competition looks like being a battle between the Lamborgh- inis of Tasmanian Jason White and South Australian Kevin Weeks, the Nissan GT-R of Queenslander Tony Quinn and Western Australian Dean Herridge’s Subaru Impreza WRX STI. If the event is dry, as it was in 2008, then Jim Richard’s Porsche 911 GT2 CS could be the car to catch. Or it could be Ray Vandersee’s Australian- made Skelta G-Force, or the factory Mazda RX8 of 2008 winner Steve Glenney. ‘‘It would be great to be able to bring the winners trophy back to Tas- mania,’’ White said. ‘‘You can never discount Jim and his Porsche. He’s a crafty driver and knows this event like the back of his hand. You don’t win it eight times without being very, very fast. ‘‘Likewise, Tony Quinn is very quick and his Nissan GT-R will be a real weapon, particularly if its wet. ‘‘We are confident of a good show- ing.’’ Regardless of the winner, spectators are guaranteed to see some of the world’s greatest cars in action, and driven how their manufacturers in- tended them to be driven — fast, on closed roads. It is expected that the fight for Classic competition honours will be a battle of the Porsche 911s, with the odd Aussie V8 thrown in to add spice to the contest. Multiple Targa Tasmania Classic winner, Rex Broadbent, has put in a last-minute entry this year. ‘‘I only put my entry in on the very last day and have only driven in a hillclimb since the last Targa Tas- mania, so I will be bit rusty to start with,’’ Broadbent said. Despite this, none of his rivals are expecting that to affect his speed. Broadbent’s 1974 Carrera RS will be challenged by the similar vehicles of NSW hot-shot Bill Pye, and Victorian Peter Eames and John Ireland’s 1977 Porsche 911 can’t be discounted. The best Tasmanian chance of a Classic victory appears to be the thumping 1977 Holden Torana A9X of David Cooper, in a field that includes everything from a Mercedes Benz 350 SLC to a 1948 Holden 215. One determining factor in the Clas- sics could be the length of the event. Ageing cars can sometimes break- down, and if this is the case for the front runners, then drivers such as Geoff Duggan (1969 Datsun 2000 Sports) and former gravel rally cham- pion, Paul Batten (1961 Volvo PV544), could be in with a real chance of an upset. The emerging Modern competition is a class that seems likely to attract more and more manufacturer entries over coming years. It’s currently a Mitsubishi benefit with Lancer Evos making up the majority of the field, but Mazda, Volkswagen, Holden and Hyundai are also represented.
