The Mercury Cars Guide : May 1st 2010
8--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, May 1, 2010 Transmission troubles WORRIES: The diff in a Nissan Navara failed despite the ute only being used for light duties. firstname.lastname@example.org with GRAHAM SMITH COIL CATASTROPHE: Two coils in a reader's Commodore VE Omega failed in 15 months. Q I have noted with interest the reports of problems with the Nissan Navara. The differential in my son s 2008 Nissan Navara D22 Dual-Cab collapsed after just 30,000km. The dealer said the problem was caused by shock overload and it was therefore not covered by warranty. I found it strange, as the vehicle is a four- wheel-drive yet only used for light duties in the suburbs of Brisbane carrying toolboxes and ladders and not used for any four-wheel driving. Because it was needed for work, replacement original Nissan parts where obtained and the differential repaired. The company that carried out the repairs found on dismantling the differential that the problem was caused by a loose bearing that was not fitted correctly and had worked loose. This could only have been found by dismantling the differential and not just looking through an inspection plate as the dealer had done. We wrote to Nissan in October 2009 and did not get a response. How do you bring an international company to account when they will not even reply to a letter? It would appear that they are a law unto themselves. Your advice on a direction to follow would be appreciated. Frank Kinninmont email As the repairs were not carried out by a Nissan dealer you need to submit a detailed report on the failure written by the people who did the work. It should be accompanied by a letter requesting that Nissan reimburse you for the cost of repairs. Unfortunately you are in a situation where it s your word against their s, so you need to have good backup documentation to support your case. Q My parents own a 2001 Holden Barina and I own a 2006 Ford Focus. When I asked my parents Holden dealer which fuel they should use I was told they could use E10. The only thing they said was that the emission light on the dash might come on after a while and that if that happens they would change the code for it. I also rang our Ford dealer and asked the same question. They said we couldn t, and that we should use the higher premium unleaded. Are they correct?Karen Dixon email The Barina will run happily on E10 and I doubt the dealers advice about the emission light. Ford, on the other hand, recommends you use the higher octane rating premium fuel, hence the advice not to use E10. Your Focus will run on E10, probably without any trouble, but it will run better on premium unleaded. Q Over the past 15 months I have had two ignition coils fail on my 2006 VE Commo- dore Omega, which has 93,000km on the clock. The first was replaced under warranty, the second one cost me $336.15 to replace by the local Holden dealer. I have owned seven Holdens over the past 42 years and this is the first time that I have experienced ignition coil failures. The local Holden dealer tells me that it is not a common problem with the VE. Are you aware of the problem? If not, is it possible that my vehicle has been fitted with lemon coils, and if so do you think that it would be worth my while to approach Holden to have the remaining coils replaced free of charge? It is a bit daunting not knowing if the remaining coils are likely to fail in the immediate future. Ron Gregory Kiama Downs, NSW It s not a common problem, but it isn t unusual for ignition coils to fail. I don t believe you could be reimbursed for the lemon coils , after all one lasted close to 100,000km before it died. I doubt that any claim to have the other four coils replaced would find favour with Holden. Q Recently the transmission in my 2006 Mercedes-Benz ML 350 has been intermit- tently sticking in gear, and when it does it won t come out unless I stop the car and restart it. The issue seems to be electronic. It worries me as last week when turning right across heavy oncoming traffic it stuck in a high gear and just limped through the intersection. I have done some internet research and discovered that this model is subject to having a limp home mode issue. I have taken the car in to be repaired, but the problem couldn t be replicated. It is a huge safety issue as far as I am concerned. Can you best suggest how I should approach Mercedes to resolve this issue? Marco email Approach them head on. Take it back to your dealer and insist the problem be sorted out. If they feel they can t solve the issue, request they get a Mercedes technician in to check the car. There s no other way to do it, other than directly. Q Recently, when returning home from Adel- aide in my restored 1936 Oldsmobile I filled with fuel at Bordertown. After filling the tank I discovered a small notice on the pump that the fuel may contain ethanol . I started to have problems after driving just 100m. The car wouldn t go faster than 45km/h and pinged at the slightest hint of acceleration. Later I pulled over at a free coffee station and parked with my back wheels in a small depression and then found the car didn t have enough power to pull out of it when I went to drive on. After that I stopped at every servo on the way home to top the tank up and dilute the original fill. By the time I arrived home the car was running much better, but it still took a few days to recover properly. The lesson is that it pays to be careful about ethanol. G. Tibbett Noble Park, Vic While it could have been a problem with ethanol in the fuel, it could also just be a case of dodgy fuel. Crook fuel has always been a problem, long before they were putting ethanol in it. It always pays to be careful when buying fuel, whether its got ethanol or not.
