Aurion enters big-six arena Graham Smith assesses the 2006 Toyota Aurion for the used car pick of the week TOYOTA threatened to enter the big-six market for many years before it took the plunge with the Aurion. When the Lexcen-badged Commodore failed they launched the bland Avalon and when that did nothing to excite the masses they tried the Aurion. The Aurion was launched in tough times for the traditional big- six. Sales were on the slide and buyers were turning towards smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. But the Aurion presented some- thing a little different in the segment that had been dominated by Holden and Ford for many years and enough buyers signed up for Toyota to claim it as a success. model watch Toyota's pitch for the Aurion was a good one; it had class leading power and economy and best value-for-money. The Aurion shared its mechanical package with the Camry but Toyota engineers worked hard to differentiate it from its sibling. It was given a more aggressive look, while the cabin got new seats, a revised dash and dials and a large centre console. The 3.5-litre V6 boasted 204 kW at 6200 revs and 336 Nm at 4700 revs, which was more than the Falcon or Commodore could muster at the time. There was a six-speed auto transmission with touch change manual shifting and intelligent auto operation. The final drive was through the front wheels, something Aussies had spurned in their big cars in the past. But Toyota was confident those fears had long since faded. There were five models in total, split into two groupings. On one side were the sporty models including the Sportivo, while on the other were the luxury variants including the Presara. on the road With 200-plus kW on tap there was no shortage of zip with the Aurion. It jumped out of the blocks and delivered right through the rev range. It had good power and torque and it came through in trumps on the road with good acceleration away from the mark and plenty of pickup when needed on the highway. The ride was comfortable, aided by comfortable and supportive seats, while the handling was assured and responsive. There was a lot to like about the Aurion. on the lot Pay $15,000 to $20,000 for the base AT-X, but for a more sporty ride pay $20,000 to $25,000 for a Sportivo SX6 or $22,000 to $30,000 for a Sportivo ZR6. If you prefer comfort and prestige a Prodigy can be had for $20,000 to $25,000 while a Presara will set you back $24,000 to $32,000. in the shop Overall the Aurion lives up to Toyota's reputation for quality and reliability, it is a generally sound car that gives little trouble. There have been some reports of piston slap, some owners have complained about dash rattles, while complaints of the intermediate steering shaft coming loose have been heard. One owner complained of the cost of changing spark plugs when needed, this is because of the difficulty in getting to the three rear plugs. Check service records to confirm regular oil and filter changes. in a crunch The Aurion boasted a comprehensive safety package, both active and passive. It had ABS braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control and stability control, which was as good as it got when it was launched. On the passive front it had front airbags for the driver and passenger, as well as side and head airbags. ANCAP rated the Aurion at four stars. at the pump Toyota claimed an impressive 9.9 L/100 km for its new big car, which is being borne out in service with owners reporting figures of 8.5-9.9 L/100 km around town. owners say Danny Stahr drives a V8 Holden Crewman but is impressed by his wife's 2007 Aurion. It feels incredibly quick, so quick he reckons it would outdo his V8, but he says care is needed when trying to get the power down in the wet. His wife also loves it, she says it feels light and responsive, but its a little hard to judge the rear when parking due to the high rear window. Danny's mechanic was not impressed when he had to disassemble quite a few components to change the spark plugs. Drew Soulby bought a fully optioned Aurion ZR6 new in 2006, and while he's had a few niggling problems with it reckons its a great car. The problems he had include a dash rattle, a sunroof rattle, poor window tint, a cracked console, and a failed hose on the engine, but all were fixed under warranty. also check these VE COMMODORE (2006-2008) Class leader sets the all-round pace with stylish lines, economical V6, rear-wheel drive handling. Is safe, comfortable, generally reliable and quite well built. Pay $17,000 to $38,000. BF/BF II FALCON (2005-2008) Roomy, comfortable with heaps of easy driving performance the BF was a good family car. Fuel economy isn't great and it only has a four-speed auto. Build quality can be an issue, and dealing with Ford and its dealers can be frustrating. Pay $12,000 to $31,000. Coming up: What do you think of your Chrysler Crossfire?
