The Mercury Cars Guide : June 12th 2010
12--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, June 12, 2010 Nissan Z to show its super powers The new Nissan Z isn't due until 2012, so company head Carlos Ghosn wants to make sure it is powered to perfection. Peter Lyon reports from Japan PACKING A PUNCH: The new Nissan Z, which is set for release in 2012, will have a strong focus on engine performance and fuel efficiency. T HE next new Nissan Z-car could use diesel, hybrid or even Diesotto power. The powerplant punch is expected as part of the latest link between Nissan-Renault and Daim- ler, which is expected to see German engines fitted into the French and Japanese cars. The head of Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, has already announced that Mercedes-Benz diesels will find their way into the Z's engine bay, and now a source close to the company says there could be even bigger changes. Ghosn has been keeping a close eye on hybrid sports cars, especially the Ferrari 599 hybrid concept and the Porsche 911 GT3 R hybrid, which led last month's Nurburgring 24-hour race for 15 hours. He can see the potential and wants that kind of performance and fuel mileage for his Nissan Z. The Daimler deal suggests that Renault-Nissan will contribute three- and four-cylinder petrol engines and electric vehicle technology to the partnership, while Daimler will de- liver four-, six- and eight-cylinder powerplants to the French-Japanese alliance. The tie-up is expected to affect the new Zed when it hits showrooms in early 2012, though fans of the sports car will miss the award-winning VQ- series V6, which is also used in the Maxima. Nissan will find it easier to meet strict new emission and fuel-economy targets in the US and Europe with the Mercedes diesels, while Daimler will achieve its goal by borrowing electric technology from Nissan and employ- ing it on cars such as the Smart. Ghosn really pushed for this al- liance because he wants a bigger, more fuel-efficient engine choice for his new Z and other Infiniti luxury models, and by getting into bed with Daimler he can also pick up some extra status. Several Japanese carmakers, in- cluding Toyota and Honda, have struggled in recent years with sports cars and their popularity. One way of re-injecting interest back into sports coupes is by associat- ing them with environmentally con- scious diesel engines and hybrid technology, with the marginally suc- cessful Honda CR-Z hybrid coupe as the current stand-out model for petrol hybrids. The hybrid choice for the Zed is linked to Benz's S400 hybrid package in the current S-Class flagship, but it is also looking at the latest BlueTech clean diesels. One other potential engine that might find its way into the Z if Nissan has its way is the Mercedes Diesotto unit. Combining the best features of diesels and petrol engines into one powerplant, the Diesotto is a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine generating 177kW. Motoring along in a marriage of convenience NISSAN boss Carlos Ghosn says Renault-Nissan needs its new al- liance with Daimler to survive. He believes every major carmaker is looking for links in the 21st century, though not buyouts or mergers, and he sets a production target for future winners. No three million-unit carmaker can make it,'' Ghosn says. And you can't be viable as a niche player, so you need to be in the upper, lower, 4x4 and crossover segments.'' He says technology is getting more expensive because car com- panies must simultaneously develop petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric technology. Technologies are expensive and you need a partner because nobody can afford to do it all alone,'' Ghosn says. He says the Renault-Nissan al- liance, where the French company controls 42 per cent of the Japanese one, is more flexible than a conven- tional merger. And he believes the latest tie-up with Daimler can also work for both companies. HURRY INTO PERFORMANCE SUBARU. STOCK IS LIMITED.
