The Mercury Cars Guide : June 12th 2010
14--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, June 12, 2010 Tackling tyre noise proves problematic firstname.lastname@example.org with GRAHAM SMITH DILEMMA: A reader wants advice on tyres for his Toyota Camry. Q I have a 2006 Toyota Camry Grande which is due for new tyres all round. It seems easy to get advice and reviews about the best tyres for performance and longevity, but a lot harder to get the same if you are looking for low road noise. That s what I want, what would you suggest? Barnett Backing, email Try the new Michelin Primacy LC. We are told that it s specifically designed for a smooth ride and low road noise. Q Over the years my brother-in-law had noticed a fault code for the ABYSS system showing on his 2005 VE Commodore, but there was nothing abnormal until last week when the brake pedal went all the way down and he effectively had no stopping power. He had to rely on the hand brake to stop. Incidentally, he had topped up the brake fluid reservoir with power steer- ing fluid a few days earlier, but I don t think any air would have got into the system as the reservoir fluid level was still above the minimum mark at the time he topped it up. Can you explain why this would happen?Hy Luu, email Using power steering fluid instead of brake fluid is probably the reason the brake pedal went to the floor and you lost all braking. You need to have the brake system flushed and filled with new brake fluid. It also sounds like you should have the car checked to inves- tigate why the ABYSS light is coming on.Q I have just picked my 2005 Mazda6 MPS up after its 60,000km service and have been informed that the front brake pads and rotors will need replacing at the next scheduled service at a cost of about $800. This is obviously the cost of having a performance car, but one thing readers should consider. Andrew Bourke, email Brake wear is something all new car buyers need to be aware of, and perhaps something they should quiz dealers about before they commit to a car. That way they won t be surprised when they get a hefty bill for replacing discs and pads sometime later on. Q I have had nothing but trouble with the 2006 BF MKII Falcon XR6T I bought in 2009 which has just clocked up 38,000km. My current concern is with the six-speed auto, which really bangs into sixth gear at around 80 km/h when cruising and has now started to clunk when changing down into first coming to a stop. Ford had a ZF technician check it a few months ago, and I was told that the tyres needed changing, that they were somehow causing the sensors for the auto to get confused. Following their advice I had four brand new tyres fitted, but, surprise, surprise, it didn t fix the problem. I took it straight back to Ford, but they couldn t find any fault when they checked it. This time when they contacted the ZF technician he sug- gested the problem could be caused by outside influences, like contaminated fluid, modified PCM, etc, and it was not under warranty. They did mention that they could see the line pressures were high on the 5th to 6th shift. It was at this stage that I sent a letter to Ford, asking what s going on? . I received a reply saying: we are satisfied that your vehicle is operating to manufactured specification and is similar to other vehicles in the model line . So how can Ford release a car that bangs into gear? Daniel H, email You are not alone in asking that question, and there is no simple answer to it. There is clearly a problem with the gearbox, and we are attempting to get an answer from Ford on the cause and what they plan to do about it. Q I see FG Falcon owners are complaining about the shift qual- ity of their auto transmissions. Well, I own a BF2 XR6 turbo and I also have a problem with the transmission. It thumps on downshifts and there is an abrupt shift/thump when you acceler- ate again after slowing to 5km/h or so. My car has travelled 93,000km and I have raised the issue at every service, and like other owners I have had the same response and the same fix --- reflash/reset the computer. The prob- lem goes away for a week or two then reappears. One dealer even flew the ZF expert down from Sydney for the last service under warranty and the prob- lem received the same fix as in the past and it is still there and getting worse. A mechanic has told me he has had to fix two six-speed BF Falcons with 100,000km on the clocks. Louis Nassios, email Hard shifting has been an ongoing issue with the ZF auto, and like you say, other owners have had the Ford fix of a recal of the computer without any lasting success. Q My 1997 VS Toyota Lexcen has done 238,000km, lacks power and going up a slight incline it drops back a gear. It needs a service with new plugs and oil filters, but my mechanic said the valves or something was sticking and it would cost $1500 to fix. I drive about 800km a week, mostly on LPG, but would it be worth adding an injector cleaner to the tank for a couple of fills? Sue Wallace, email No, using an injector cleaner would only help if you were running on petrol. It would have no effect at all if you were running on gas. I would suspect that the engine is tired and in need of a freshen up, particularly if it s been running on gas for some time. Installing new plugs and leads would help, but I would suggest you have the com- pression checked. That would tell you if the valves are sticking, or even leaking. Q Is it worth the cost to upgrade my 1998 VT Commodore to tow a caravan weighing less than one tonne? I have previously been advised to upgrade the suspension and fit a tow bar costing some $3000 all up. It has done 208,000km, has not been driven hard, I have recently had a trans- mission seal leak repaired, and yes, it does have independent suspension. Peter Angwin, email No, I wouldn t waste my money on doing it because it will handle one tonne without a problem. Sure, the weight of the trailer will mean the rear suspen- sion will ride lower, but I don t believe that s enough to justify the expense of upgrading your suspension.
