The Mercury Cars Guide : June 19th 2010
6--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, June 19, 2010 Ford to give fans rare tour THE gates to Ford's top-secret proving ground near Geelong are being thrown open to the public. However, there's a small catch. They will only be open to 50 lucky winners of Ford's ultimate Ford experience'' competition. The competition is being held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the country's much-loved Falcon. It's an opportunity money can't buy,'' Ford spokesperson, Sinead McAlary says. We never allow the public into the proving ground and security is always strictly controlled.'' The winners will not only get a tour of the multi-million dollar You Yangs facility but also the chance to be driven around the high-speed testing track by Ford's test drivers. Apart from the behind-the- scenes look at the proving ground, winners will also have VIP access to Ford's Campbellfield styling studio, a tour of the Campbellfield and Geelong assembly plants, and lunch with Ford racing legends Dick Johnson and Alan Moffatt. To get the chance to see one of the country's top-secret proving grounds simply head to Facebook, click like'' on the Falcon turns 50 fan page'' --- www.facebook.com/ FalconTurns50 --- and follow the instructions. The competition closes on July 9. NEIL McDONALD Waiting game for new Swift MORE ECONOMICAL: The third generation Suzuki Swift. SUZUKI has resized its entry in the small car fight building a larger Swift --- but while the new model has had its first showing in Hungry, you will have to wait until next autumn to drive one home. Suzuki Australia isn't saying much about the model line-up, engines or prices, except promising this third generation version will be more econ- omical and have more performance. That's an expected given. What we do know is that while the Swift's overall design hasn't changed, it has grown in size and it has more cabin space. Importantly, it will be wider and sit lower, reflecting how much Suzuki has been working on the car's hand- ling to give it a more sporty flavour to match its name. It is also likely the three-door version will be axed, with the five- door hatch being dearer because it will have more features. ''We are very excited about the preliminary release of the new car, but we are still some way off finalising the Australian version of the next Swift,'' Suzuki Australian general manager Tony Devers said. ''The new Swift doesn't go on sale here until the first half of next year, so we still have some development time to work through.'' The European version will come with a new 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel. Devers said he was considering all potential powertrain options. While the current model Swift is at the end of its model life it is still selling well for Suzuki. Last month it was the fourth biggest seller in the light car sector behind Hyundai's Getz, the Toyota Yaris and the Mazda2. KEITH DIDHAM OUR BIG CLEARANCE SALE O N S T - NS O All prices include GST.
