The Mercury Cars Guide : July 10th 2010
2--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, July 10, 2010 FIRST DRIVE Jeep Grand Cherokee THINGS ARE LOOKING UP: The new Grand Cherokee ticks all the boxes. Grand way DRIVEN Paul Gover Bankruptcy could be the best thing that ever happened to Chrysler Corporation, judging by the new Grand Cherokee from Jeep we checked out in San Francisco T HE financial collapse last year forced new thinking at Chrysler and triggered a serious survival plan. As a result, the latest Grand Cherokee is the first Jeep in generations --- perhaps in company history --- without shortcuts or excuses. It has been designed and developed to do a job and it delivers with commendable quality, classy on-road driving and the sort of off-road ability that easily trumps all but the most committed getaway drivers. Jeep people say it puts the ''grand'' back into the Cherokee --- and they might be right. It should definitely put shoppers back into showrooms. The Grand Cherokee is still short of the class leaders, but it claws back plenty of the ground lost to luxury SUVs such as the BMW X5 in recent years --- especially in cabin quality and for city and suburban driving. The new Grand is expected to have a starting price of less than $55,000 when the first cars begin arriving in the final weeks of this year, ready for a big push early in the new year. The fourth-generation package includes everything from a new V6 Pentastar petrol engine to vastly improved suspension, 45 new safety features and a two-level line-up that could be expanded to include a fully loaded Overland flagship currently focused on big spenders in the US. ''Today is about making a statement. We need to reclaim the ground and this product is the first step,'' says Steve Bartoli, product planning chief at Chrysler Corporation. ''You don't go through what we went through last year and not re- invent yourself. We are a very optimistic, hard-working group of people.'' The hard work on the Grand Cherokee actually began with the Mercedes-Benz ML because the full- sized SUVs were development twins in the time when Daimler and Chrysler were joined. But Bartoli says the Jeep group quickly split and went its own way, taking the best bits --- including Jeep's first independent rear suspension --- as part of its severance package. ''You depart pretty quickly from the program. What the ML enabled us to do is get to a better on-road solution, which has been elusive to Jeep over the years,'' he says. ''The learning is applicable to other Jeeps in the future.
