There are a limited range of demos. Most expensive Porsche ever Porsche still haven't decided if 918 Spyder will go into production, but it'll cause a big stir if it hits showrooms. MARK HINCHLIFFE reports DECISION TIME: The Porsche 918 Spyder concept car was unveiled a few months ago. 'If it does go into production it would be a very limited run; say 800 to 1000' AMODERN hybrid version of the 550 Spyder cult actor James Dean died in may soon go into production. The 918 Spyder concept car debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Porsche Cars Australia boss Michael Winkler says a decision on production of the 918 will be made in the next two weeks. ''If it does go into production it would be a very limited run; say 800 to 1000,'' he says. Industry experts tip it would be the most expensive Porsche produced, with cost estimates of more than $700,000. Winkler says the hybrid system from the 918 concept car and the new Cayenne S Hybrid, which was developed jointly with VW, would be extended to the Panamera next year. He said a decision on a smaller Cayenne would depend on discussions with VW. But he quashed media speculation of a two-door Panamera that some are calling a return to the 928. ''It's the same as speculation of an all-wheel drive Panamera. It doesn't fit with this car,'' he says. ''There is no market for it. ''When the 928 was built it was an engineering exercise. They made the car and then tried to sell it. ''Now we look at what the market wants first before building a car.'' He would also not confirm timing for the Cayman and Boxster, although updates must be imminent given the full range of 911 variants have now been released. Going north NORTH Queensland is the next target for a Porsche dealership. Porsche Cars Australia managing director Michael Winkler says he has not yet decided whether the dealership should be in Townsville or Cairns. ''It would not necessarily be a stand-alone dealership,'' he says. ''But they would have to have a separate building and a dedicated Porsche mechanic. ''There is a lot of interest up north with a small Porsche club and a lot of second-hand Porsches finding their way up there.'' There is a Porsche dealership in every capital city, including Canberra, plus the Gold Coast. SUV move vindicated', boss says THE controversial decision for Porsche to break away from sports cars into SUVs has been vindicated, Michael Winkler says. He says the original business decision was based on selling 25,000 Cayennes worldwide a year. Now we are selling up to 46,000 a year so, from a business perspective, it was the right decision to make,'' he says. I'm not sure how many Cayennes will be sold this year. It depends on production and supply. We have already sold out three to four months of supply.'' There are 16,000 orders worldwide for the Cayenne with only 11,000 produced so far. Winkler says he expects top-end models to sell well in the initial stages. The hybrid will be a bit of a novelty in this market and very few people will be interested until they have driven it,'' he says. It has been given an S designation because it has the same performance.'' It reaches 100km/h in 6.5 seconds compared with the S at 5.9 seconds and the diesel at 7.8 seconds. The only outside differentiation is a small hybrid'' badge on the front fender, while on the tailgate it says Cayenne S''.
