The Mercury Cars Guide : July 17th 2010
Saturday, July 17, 2010 Classifieds 62 300 400 carsguide.com.au ---17 CONCEPT BMW's six-cylinder BMW serves up six of the best TWO WHEELS BEEMER BEAUTY: BMW is producing a six cylinder bike. MARK HINCHLIFFE B MW is already producing its first six- cylinder motorcycle engines for its new sport-touring bike due for release in December. A recent tour of the BMW motorcycle plant in Berlin revealed boxes of six-cylinder crankcases and a walled-off section of the factory behind which tour guide Diesing Achim said they were making the in-line six- cylinder engines. He said the wall was designed to keep the production secret and that he had not seen the completed bike yet. BMW revealed the engine last November at the Milan show in a Concept 6 and has now released details on the production bikes to be known as the K 1600 GT and GTL. BMW Group Australia corporate communications manager Piers Scott said he expected the bike to appear at Intermot, the major international motorcycle show, held for the first time at Cologne in October. He said it would be available in Australia mid next year. Although it features a compact engine, it will still require a long wheelbase and swingarm to fit in the frame. Achim said the frame section of the Berlin factory was also off limits to the tour because of work on the new bike. The factory was established in 1916 to make making aircraft engines and has been used for BMW motorcycle production exclusively since 1969. Achim says the austere brick building is '''historically protected'' and they are not allowed to change the outside. But in 2003, BMW spent about $245 million on modernising the assembly line to produce the modern twin-cam boxer engines, the 1000cc superbike engine and the new six- cylinder engine. While production of the six was hidden from view, we know that it will have an over-square bore/stroke ratio, long stroke and close cylinders. Power will be 118kW at 7500rpm which is less than the 129kW in the 1.3-litre straight- four engine in the K1300. However, torque is 175Nm at 5000rpm which is substantially more than the 140Nm in the K series and should make it a better tourer, capable of hauling more luggage and pillion weight. The K 1600 GT will have an extensive range of standard features including a Xenon headlight; heated grips and seat; cruise- control and an on-board computer. The GTL will add a sound system and a comprehensive luggage system. While no bike weights have been listed yet, BMW has announced that the engine will weigh 102.6kg and measure 506mm in width. Like most of its top-end bikes, it will come with electronic rider aids such as traction control, ABS and three riding modes (rain, road and dynamic) which are expected to adjust engine performance and the electronically adjustable suspension. BMW has made the wheelbase longer to accommodate the engine, but have stayed with their Duolever and Paralever suspension configuration. The bike will also have a world-first adaptive self-levelling headlight to improve lighting when cornering. Interest in motorbikes takes a dip POPULAR CHOICE: The Honda CT110X was the top selling bike this year. THE lure of two wheels fell slightly in the first half of this year, but dealer discounts and factory incentives could still see the market top 100,000 sales for the year, or 10 per cent of the projected vehicle market. Figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show 48,842 bikes and ATVs were sold to June 30, a 12.1 per cent dip from the same time last year. Scooters fared best, falling to 5158 sales (down 8.4 per cent), followed by a 10 per cent dip in road bikes with 18,894 machines sold. Off-road machines were the worst performers, with a 13.7 per cent slump in dirt bikes to 16,625 sales, while 8165 ATVs were sold, be down 16 per cent. Honda regained its role as the country's best-selling brand with 10,554 sales, 1665 ahead of Yamaha, while Suzuki was a further 1810 sales back in third place. FCAI chief executive Andrew McKellar said it was still a good time to buy, with manufacturers offering incentives for riders to trade up or buy their first bike. ''These, added to the already sound environmental and economic reasons to buy a motorcycle, should renew confidence in the market place in the second half of the year,'' Mr McKellar says. ''There is an obvious softening of demand during the winter months but increases in interest rates in the first half of the year have certainly impacted on the market.'' Taiwanese bike builder Kymco continues to gain traction, based on an increased product line-up in Australia. It sold 1158 machines for the first six months, more than double the same time last year. And there's no doubting the company's quality --- BMW Motorrad uses a Kymco-built engine in its G450 X enduro bike. Buell was a surprise performer with a 62.6 per cent sales rise, possibly due to people buying the now-defunct brand --- Harley- Davidson stopped making the marque in October last year as a speculative investment. BMW also performed well, boosted by its entry into the sportsbike market, which earned the German brand another 136 sales. The US-built Victory V-twin cruisers and tourers also enjoyed a 12 per cent improvement with 81 bikes sold, though they won't be worrying Harley for a while yet, with the well-established American brand selling more than 3000 machines last year. Honda's CT110 X ''postie bike'' is again the biggest seller, followed by Kawasaki's Ninja 250cc learners' bike and the Honda CRF50 kids' bike.
