The Mercury Cars Guide : July 31st 2010
18--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, July 31, 2010 SUVs Performance models Hard edge of the soft-roaders KILLER WHALES: Giants of the four-wheel drive world the Audi V12 diesel Q7 TDI, left and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. The big brutes that can embarrass sportscars. You've seen them blocking out the sun but don't think for one second that some of these big SUVs are unstable behemoths that handle like the Titanic. STUART MARTIN reports T HERE are plenty of SUVs that are anything but performance cars, but a few key niche models on offer make for some interesting reading ... and driving. It must be what driving a block of flats with lights is like - and probably not very different in an aerodynamic sense. All are well on the wrong side of $100,000 and several are north of $200,000. Whip the big wheels and the low profile tyres off and most would probably get to Birdsville - particularly those that have retained the low-range transfer case and can raise themselves on height-adjustable suspension. Audi Q7 V12 TDI WITH apologies to Sir Isaac, we have recently been driving with a Newton-kilometre under the right foot. It's an all-powerful feeling, even though the terminology may not be completely accurate from a physics perspective. The six-litre V12 twin-turbodiesel with Le Mans links has 1000Nm on offer from 1750rpm to 3250rpm and it is apparent immediately that you're about to change the rotational rate of the earth from the first throttle application, or dig some large ditches if the surface is not sealed. The Audi leviathan is an impressive beast with massive road presence, the de-rigeur LED lights on the rump and snout and all that grunt which is delivered with a minimum of aural fuss. Massive shadowy 21in diameter alloy wheels are wrapped with low-35-profile tyres cover carbon-ceramic disc brakes and monster calipers, which offer mammoth stopping performance. The big Q7 flagship can still remind the driver of its girth in the corners. - it does sit flat when in Dynamic suspension mode but the weight in the nose. The standard carbon-ceramic brakes - with eight-piston front and four-piston rear calipers - feel as though they can rip up the road as much as the drivetrain can on take-off. All this and sub-teen fuel use Audi says it has a claimed ADR figure of 11.3l/100km from the twin-turbo V12 common-rail direct- injection diesel. Our all too brief stint saw the trip computer with 15l/100km on it when we handed back the keys, pining not only for the 1000Nm but the 14-speaker 1000-watt Bang and Olufsen sound system. Audi Q7 V12 TDI Price: from $254,900 Power: 368kW Torque: 1000Nm Transmission: six-speed automatic, all-wheel drive. Performance: 0-100km/h 5.5 seconds Weight: 2605kg BMWX6M WHILE the X6 has been described as the answer to a question no one asked, the X6 M just obliterates the question with mind- altering performance. Top of the list of attributes is the 4.4-litre V8, a 32-valve unit with variable valve timing and lift, a very nice powerplant before the boffins get to it. The engineers have added forced-induction to the big V8 and the power rises to 408kW, with 680Nm between 1500 and 5650rpm, translating to a 100km/h sprint in a claimed 4.7 seconds. The X6 M can get through the twisty bits as well, with adaptive suspension, beefy brakes and a clever rear differential that is part of the X6 range. The multi-clutch rear differential helps drive the vehicle around a bend - a step up from a standard limited slip differential in that it supplies a little bit of drive torque to the inside wheel, but the bulk to the outside loaded wheel. BMWX6M Price: from $179,900 Power: 408kW Torque: 680Nm Transmission: six-speed automatic, all-wheel drive. Performance: 0-100km/h 4.7 seconds Weight: 2305kg Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG The new M-Class Benz range has a broad variety of engines on offer, which when teamed with the off-road engineering package will take the big Merc a long way off the beaten track. Diff locks, low range and height-adjustable suspension suggest off-road ability now only available on a couple of high-performance SUVs, but not this one. The ML63 can't get the off-road bits, instead sitting on 20in alloy wheels and air suspension. The seven-speed auto is bolted to the back of a 6.2-litre V8 - the first AMG-produced powerplant and a cracker of an engine - producing 375kW and 630Nm. Drive is split 40:60 between the front and rear wheels, which are brought to a halt by the AMG high-performance braking system - big internally ventilated and dimpled brake discs with four-pot front and two-pot rear calipers. Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG Price: from $171,500. Power: 375kW at 6800rpm Torque: 630Nm at 5200rpm Transmission: seven-speed automatic, all-wheel drive. Performance: 0-100km/h 5 seconds Weight: 2310kg Porsche Cayenne Turbo The new look Cayenne has never been likely to win the beauty pageant, but the performance more than made up for it. No longer encumbered with off-road gear like a low-range transfer case, the newest incarnation of the Porsche SUV has long been the quickest and arguably most capable of the high-performance ''off-roaders.'' Almost 200kg lighter, with a direct-injection twin-turbo V8, adaptive and height-adjustable suspension controlling 20in alloys, performance is considerable but consumption is down by almost a quarter - a claim of 11.5 litres per 100km is no mean feat for something with this much potential. On the Cayenne's option list is a similar of system to the BMW - called Torque Vectoring. Porsche Cayenne Turbo Price: from $239,900. Power: 368kW Torque: 700Nm between 2250 & 4500rpm Performance: 0-100km/h 4.7 seconds Weight: 2170kg Range Rover Sport supercharged V8 The bargain-basement machine in this gaggle, the little Rangie is perhaps the best all-rounder here, offering serious performance both on and off the road. Originally based on the Discovery's platform, the RR Sport had the clever Terrain Response system before its Vogue sibling, endowing the little wagon with rock-hopping abilities far beyond the norm for hot SUVs. The only limiting factor is the rubber, which has to be a compromise given the on-road dynamic ability of the Rangie Sport - after all, the clever suspension has to let a bit of body roll back in at 0.4 lateral g to remind the driver they're in a tall wagon. The recently-updated model's Terrain Response system now includes 'Dynamic' mode, designed for sporting on-road driving. - although it was no slouch to begin with. A recent squirt in the new naturally-aspirated V8 model - which offers a far-from-lacklustre 276kW and 510Nm - was enlightening. Range Rover Sport supercharged V8 Price: from $159,900 Power: 375kW Torque: 625Nm Transmission: six-speed automatic, all-wheel drive.
