The Mercury Cars Guide : August 7th 2010
10--- Classifieds 62 300 400 carsguide.com.au Saturday, August 7, 2010 MAKING NOISE Toyota Rukus Designers toss the car and When a car is practical, safe, comfortable, accessible, simple to use and has plenty of room you think Toyota --- and old people, writes DAVID FITZSIMONS POLARISING: The Toyota Rukus is considered ugly, pretty or pretty ugly. TOYOTA'S boxy new Rukus fits the description perfectly --- but Toyota is promoting the car as funky and cutting edge, a car for ''young urban trendsetters.'' The Rukus looks a great car for empty nesters but the young people I showed it to weren't excited. There is no doubting its boxy shape and lines (some people confused it with a delivery van) will polarise people. Driving down Parramatta Rd one night I was stunned to find people winding down their windows in traffic and asking me what this new car was all about. The last time that happened to me in a press car was in an extremely brand new BA Falcon, and we had Marcos Ambrose driving it. It certainly stands out but whether that is good or bad is still to be decided by sales. On the face of it the Rukus is well priced, comfortable, should benefit from Toyota's renowned reliability (in Australia at least), has enough power, lively acceleration to scoot around town and big wide windows for clear vision all round to recommend it as a good buy. And it's actually bigger than I expected, inside and out --- more like a Camry than a Corolla. But there are a few shortcomings. The urban boxy car is a big hit in Japan where young people do tart them up with stripes and flames, sportier wheels and bigger exhausts etc. But just like the Rukus' nearest opponent, the Kia Soul, it may not translate as well here. The Rukus comes in three spec levels called Build 1, 2 and 3 from $27,490 to $31,790. All have the same 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, the differences lies in the features. The base model sound system has six speakers, Bluetooth hands-free telephone and audio streaming, USB and 3.5mm audio input and a CD player. The next level gains leather on the seats, steering wheel and gearshift knob plus improvements in the airconditioning and sound system. The only extra for the top of the range car is a moonroof, which adds light to the interior. Having tested both Build 1 and Build 3 cars I found the actual driving experience is exactly the same. The efforts to make the exterior of the car stand out from the crowd continue to the interior. The most striking difference is that there are no gauges behind the steering wheel, just a black dash. Instead, the dials and displays are in the middle of the dashboard. This no doubt will make the transition from left hand to right hand drive for various world markets easier but it is awkward for the driver to be looking off centre to check them. It is bad at night, where without any backlighting behind the steering wheel, you are looking into darkness. The main screen's use is fairly limited as it only shows lists of radio stations. The other guages though are bright and easy to read. small torque Toyota Rukus Price: $27,490 (Build 1), $29,990 (Build 2), $31,790 (Build 3) Engine: 2.4L/4-cylinder 123kW/224Nm Transmission: 4-speed automatic Economy: 8.8L/100km (official), 10.9 (as tested city) Verdict: There s no middle ground, you ll either love or loathe its looks 72/100 Rivals: Kia Soul 1.6: 72/100 (from $20,990); Volkswagen Golf 90TSI wagon: 80/100 (from $26,990); Hyundai i30 2.0 Sportswagon: 78/100 (from $28,990). • 3.0L Turbo Diesel engine • 16" alloy wheels • Sports bar & side steps • Soft tonneau cover • Rear park assist • Bluetooth • 3.2L V6 engine or 2.0L Turbo Diesel • 5-speed automatic with Active Select • 7 seats • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) • Dual front & side curtain airbags • 17" alloy wheels# • Fuel economy from just 7.0L/100km◊ • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) • 6 airbags including side curtain airbags • USB & iPod compatibility • Cruise control • Automatic headlamps Colorado LT-R 4x4 Crew Cab Pick Up Captiva 7 SX AWD Cruze CD Huge 3 tonne towing capacity!
