The Mercury Cars Guide : August 14th 2010
18--- Classifieds 62 300 400 carsguide.com.au Saturday, August 14, 2010 SUVs Discovery 4 V8 Disco' is more show than go WORK WHEELS EYE CATCHING: The Land Rover Discovery 4 may look great, but doubts linger about its performance. DON'T condemn all SUVs as unsafe and unsociable. The big fuel-sucking Land Rover Discovery V8 monolith might have greenies shaking in their boots and mothers running to protect their children, but it's not all bad news. In a recent demonstration about the blind spots behind vehicles and the dangers to young children, the Discovery actually fared very well. That strange tailgate window design, with the deeper right- hand side, means rearward vision is quite good --- a Commodore sedan with a boot- mounted spoiler has a blind spot 15m long compared with 3.6m for the 'Disco.' Our test vehicle was also fitted with a reversing camera to further mitigate the possibility of backing over a child. Unfortunately, the camera was faulty on our test vehicle and didn't always work. It wasn't the only fault in the test car --- the speaker on the left passenger door also vibrated. These types of faults are not acceptable on a vehicle that costs $126,460. It only reinforces the long-held belief that Land Rovers are unreliable. Together with the limited access to spare parts and knowledgeable Land Rover mechanics in the outback, it prevents some people from taking them on the ultimate adventure. I had a friend who was stranded for a week in the Northern Territory waiting on parts for his previous model Disco. Ford and now Tata ownership seems to have sorted out a lot of Land Rover's quality issues and the company this year scored fifth position in the 2009 American JD Power and Associates customer sales satisfaction survey. It's a shame these concerns about reliability persist, because the Disco 4 is an exceptionally capable outback tourer that can tackle just about any surface with its proven Terrain Response four- wheel drive system and sophisticated driver-aid features such as Gradient Release Control and Tow Assist. It is 4x4 Australia magazine's 4x4 of the Year --- its third major honour in Australia since its arrival late last year. But it seems, these days, the Disco is more about show than go, being particularly popular among American gangsta rappers. That's why the new model features a grille that looks like it is wearing braces, side vents that look like barbecue plates and so much bling inside sunglasses are advised --- even at night. With all the bells and whistles you could ever want, the cabin is a very comfortable place to be. The Disco V8 comes with not one but three massive sunroofs, making it a very airy cabin, even for those in the third row of seats. The cockpit can be a bit daunting, with the comprehensive and confronting array of instruments, switches and controls provided. But once worked out, they all function well and have some convenient features. I like the fact that you can click the ''OK'' button on the steering wheel to get rid of some of the warning messages such as ''low fuel'' or ''tailgate open.'' Another smart feature is the location of the iPod connection and charging cable in the centre console, with a convenient place to stash the iPod without it rattling and sliding around. And this would have to be the most comprehensive iPod connectivity I have come across in any vehicle. It allows you to quickly navigate all the features of your player via the convenient touch screen. Creature features abound and include a steering wheel heater, which I accidentally kept triggering when performing parking manoeuvres with multiple steering wheel turns. Together with the three sunroofs, it could be particularly irritating on a hot summer's day. The cabin is not only airy with all those sunroofs, but also roomy and the third row folds out quickly and easily and stashes away into a flat carpeted floor. However, the second row doesn't fold down to the same level. Third-row passengers will find the air suspension causes a sickening see-saw effect over undulations. Yet the suspension is great for ironing out sharp hits on rough roads, and the rear articulation is perfect for crawling over rocks and obstacles in the bush. However, together with the extremely capable Terrain Response constant four-wheel- drive system, the suspension jostles its occupants on the tarmac. It actually feels far smoother galloping down dirt roads. What a shame that most owners won't use it where the going gets rough. As for greenies concerned about CO2 emissions and fossil fuel use, the 5.0-litre 2.5-tonne Disco now features a range of e-Terrain technologies to lessen its environmental impact. They include lower engine idle speed, higher torque to allow taller gearing, and Intelligent Power System Management that uses regenerative charging for the battery rather than the engine. It still has combined fuel economy of 14.1L/100km and on test, mainly on urban errands with one gallop through the country, it yielded slightly north of 15L/100km.
