The Mercury Cars Guide : August 28th 2010
18--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, August 28, 2010 BIG WHEELS Kenworth Hybrid Hino makes automatic choice ANEW automatic transmission has widened the appeal of the Hino 300 Series hybrid truck. Until now, this diesel electric hybrid truck has only been available with a manual transmission. With more fleets moving towards automatic or automated transmissions to reduce driver fatigue, Hino was at a disadvantage. Mitsubishi Fuso, the only other truck brand with hybrid truck technology, introduced the hybrid Eco Canter with an automated transmission early this year. Now, Hino has launched the Hybrid 714 Auto with a six- speed automatic transmission, Hino's existing A860E unit. The manual equivalent will continue to be available. Hino Australia president Steve Lotter says the growth of automatic and automated transmissions in the light duty market has been strong since 2007 when only nine per cent of trucks opted for this gearbox type. ''We believe that trend will continue to grow.'' Hino says the automatic version of the hybrid should deliver even more fuel savings than the traditional manual. ''It has specially designed software to take advantage of the electric assistance during initial acceleration and to maximise energy recovery through regenerative braking,'' explains Hino Australia product guru, Alex Stewart. One of the issues Hino has experienced in the field with its manual hybrids is that drivers continue to rev them hard, using more fuel, when the electric assistance down low in the rev range means they don't have to do so. The automatic transmission takes care of that problem, by shifting at the most economical point. ''Having that high torque available from the electric motor from around 1000rpm allows for a dramatic change in the shift point of the hybrids automatic transmission,'' Stewart says. ''During acceleration, the automatic upshifts have been revised to come in much earlier. The automatic transmission is also able to generate more electricity for the batteries when the engine is decelerating by changing down gears (with the torque convertor still locked) when the vehicle is slowing. JAMES STANFORD Overhaul for trucking titan WORK WHEELS A suite of changes to the Kenworth truck range is more than cosmetic. JAMES STANFORD reports REVEALED: Kenworth's T609 and, below, the T403 retain rugged looks with their modern makeover. AUSTRALIAN trucking titan Kenworth has overhauled its range with bold styling changes, cleaner engines and several interior upgrades. The undisputed heavy duty sales champion of the Australian market revealed the 2011 range to the public at the National Road Transport Hall of Fame reunion in Alice Springs. Big Wheels visited PACCAR's Bayswater Kenworth factory to see the trucks taking shape last week along with Federal Industry Minister Senator Kim Carr. Kenworth started working on its 2011 range of trucks more than two years ago with an emphasis on making them comply with the ADR 80/03 emissions standard that comes into effect in Australia on January 1 next year. However, the company decided to use the deadline as an opportunity to make other improvements. ''The need to change for 2011 was initially driven by new emission standards, it also allowed us to further refine and enhance many other aspects of the range in line with our own research and development and feedback from our broad customer base,'' explains PACCAR sales and marketing director, Andrew Hadjikakou. Styling is a key part of the 2011 program. The aerodynamic models, including the T403,T409 and T609 as well as the K200 cab-over have all been given a significant styling upgrades which give the trucks a modern look. It is easy to spot the differences between the old and the new models. This was emphasised when Kenworth parked a T403 nose to nose with the previous generation T402 during the senator's visit. The most noticeable element for the bonneted aero models is the bigger and bolder grille with a thick chrome centre strip and surround. Then there are the new, more modern swept-back headlights, the contoured engine compartment and bolder wheel arches. Kenworth has also added stylish air vents on the sides of the bonnet which have a chrome surround and Kenworth branding. They look good, but are also functional and help cool the engine. All 2011 models get new tapered front under-run protection bumpers. Kenworth says the design of the bumper pushes more air into the grille for better cooling. The K200 also has a bold new grille and modern headlights as well as chrome-ringed air vents that sit above the headlights. The tough T409 SAR workhorse retains the same rugged styling as before as does the T359, T609, T909 and C509. Kenworth has also made several interior changes to make life easier for drivers. The Delphi heater, ventilation and airconditioning unit already fitted to the cab-over has now been added across the conventional model range. It features a serviceable filtration system to keep out dust. Kenworth has fitted new doors with new handles, electric windows and central locking across the range. There are new wider padded armrests which now feature integrated window and mirror controls. The interior of the K200 cab- over is quite different. Its cab height has been raised by 50mm with more noise and heat shielding underneath a new double-skinned floor. The cab floor is now almost flat thanks to a lower engine tunnel which means a six foot person can stand up in the sloped-roof model. There are new seats and new seat position options which provide driver and passenger with 30mm more shoulder room. The cabin steps have been upgraded with a larger top step, and new LED lights make them easier to see. There are new trim colours and Kenworth has introduced soft vinyl for several of the interior surfaces. Kenworth has also added more storage areas in the cabin. The company has continued its roll-out of potentially life-saving safety gear with its electronic brake safety systems (EBSS) suite of safety gear now available on all new models. EBBS incorporates a variety of safety systems including anti-skid brakes, drag torque control, traction control and electronic stability control. All of the new Kenworth models will now meet the ADR 80/03 emission standards thanks to a mixture of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and a particulate filter on most models and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) on its smaller T3 model. With CAT powered Kenworth's now a thing of the past, the new Kenworth range is powered exclusively by Cummins. There is a choice of ISX and Signature engines which produce between 331kW and 452kW. Kenworth is also introducing new Eaton automatic transmissions for the 2011 range. The Ultrashift Plus is a two pedal automatic gearbox which senses gradient and weight in order to make appropriate changes for efficiency and reliability. It also features Hill Start Aid, which enables drivers to safely launch on a hill without having to worry about it rolling back. Motor Cycles Suzuki Kingquad 300, 4x4, exc cond, $5,200.
