The Mercury Cars Guide : September 11th 2010
2--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, September 11, 2010 PEUGOT RCZ Peugeot says take your pick IN PASSING ONE price fits all when to comes to the new Peugeot RCZ two-door sports car. The French company's new hero vehicle arrives in three models, all listed at $54,990. ''The uniform price strategy is a great opportunity to make it easier for the customers,'' says Peugeot Automobiles Australia boss Ken Thomas. ''The numbers were so close anyway, we felt we'd make it really simple.'' The sleek 2+2 RCZ with its double-bubble roof, brushed aluminium door arches and flared guards arrives with a choice of two petrol engines and a diesel. The 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with a maximum power output of 115kW is mated to a six-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox, while the new 1.6-litre petrol engine has 147kW and a six-speed manual transmission. The two-litre turbo diesel has 120kW and a six-speed manual. He says 60 have already been sold and he expects to sell about 400 in a full year and 160 by the end of this year. value Thomas says there are no comparable cars in the class at that price. However, it sits smack in the middle of its own 308CC range and is closest in price to the Mazda RX8 ($55,700) and BMW 125i ($55,400). It's $4000 more than the Mercedes-Benz CLC 200K, but $9000 cheaper than the 1.8-litre Audi TT which it most closely resembles in its radical design, and $13,000 less than the Nissan 370Z. A $62,490 anniversary model will be at the Sydney Motor Show alongside Peugeot's 908 HDi race car in which David Brabham won the 2009 Le Mans. design This is quite a unique and radical design that could divide public opinion. Except for the red tail light, it almost looks the same coming as going. But while the overall design is unique, there are elements of other cars about it. From the rear, it looks like a Porsche Boxster. From the front it looks like a squashed 308 on which it is based. And that double-bubble roof looks a little like the 1960s Batmobile. It comes in eight colours but looks best in white to highlight the roof which is painted black no matter what the body colour is. The cabin is a mixture of sophistication and bling and will be familiar to Peugeot drivers. It has a leather-like dashboard and door trim, called Nabuck, that feels and looks soft and rubbery. Buyers can have all-leather trim for $1500 if they prefer. The leather in the sport seats with integrated headrests is a very close match. Trim is highlighted by splashes of brushed aluminium on the instruments, gearshift and pedals and the centre stack has piano black surrounds. The instruments feature carbon backing and white needles for a sporty look. technology If the exterior and interior design are a visual feast, the RCZ fairly bristles with technology you can't see. RCZ is based on the 308, but lower (18mm in front and 19mm in the rear), 30mm wider, with a 40mm lower centre of gravity, wider track (44mm front and 64mm rear) stiffer chassis and beefed-up suspension, with the dampers from a 308 GTI. A lot of work has gone into the chassis and suspension to decrease noise, vibration and harshness, but work has also been done to increase induction noise into the cabin. A box between the inlet valve and turbo has a membrane that vibrates and filters the noise into the cabin through the air vents. The result is similar to a muted Formula One racer. Brakes have been augmented over the 308 and the 147kW model gets even beefier stoppers. ESP can be turned off, although intervention is quite minimal. Aiding downforce is a boot spoiler that automatically deploys in two stages depending on speed, but can be over-ridden by a button on the centre console. It comes with parking and rain sensors, heated leather seats, climate control, USB input and Bluetooth. safety RCZ has not yet been crash tested, but the 308 platform on which it is based has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating, so Williams expects the RCZ to achieve the same. It comes with four airbags and front pre- tensioner seatbelts plus a host of driver aids Oh oh, Peugeot drops zee zero R CZ is not only a radical design departure for Peugeot, but also radical for its name. It is the first Pug without a zero in its model name. Peugeot Automobiles Australia boss Ken Thomas says it will lead distinctive'' models to come with the new non-numerical naming convention. RC stands for Rally Car and the Z has been added for sportiness,'' he explains. It doesn't line up with numerical names, but is part of the new marketing.'' where's the spare? THERE is a plastic well under the rear cargo floor of the Peugeot RCZ for a spare tyre, but there is none. Instead you get a compressor and a can of goo'' to get you mobile again if you get a flat tyre. Peugeot Automobiles Australia boss Ken Thomas says the 457mm wheel wouldn't fit. A space saver wheel is a possibility, but it's not offered,'' he says. If there is consumer resentment that is an opportunity. This is the way the car comes from the factory. This is what we have to work with.'' double bubble THE double bubble roof and rear window will become an icon in motoring design. To achieve the rear window shape to match the roof, a flat section of glass is softened by heating to 500 to 600C. It is then placed in a special mould and shaped. The most important part of the process is the cooling. It is gradually brought back to ambient temperature on a precise cooling curve. The result is no light refraction or distortion in the rear window.
