The Mercury Cars Guide : September 18th 2010
Saturday, September 18, 2010 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---15 YOUR Say It may be ugly', but it's still the best of the best MOTOR MAIL CROWN: Land Rover Discovery 4 was named Best of the Best by Overlander Magazine recently. I READ with interest the article by Fraser Stronach in regards to the Best of the Best Awards. Pleasing to see that my favourite, the Land Rover Disco 4, takes it again, even though my wife calls it the ugly one . But more interesting to note that Mitsubishi Pajero took the crown from Toyota Prado. Does Toyota take heed of such awards, or have they still got their heads in the sand and do what they want to do? When the 150 Prado first came out, some write-ups indicated the diesel was lacking in power, particularly when towing. Are there any plans to upgrade to a V6 or even the 4.5 V8 diesel, as in the 70 Series Cruiser, in the near future? I thought I read somewhere that it is available overseas. My six-year-old 120 Petrol Prado is getting a little tired and worn from all the bush work, and I m looking around for a replacement but don t want to go backwards. Edward Aleksandrowicz, Hoppers Crossing Toyota has been the four-wheel-drive leader in Australia for so long it runs its own race. We know of no plans for an engine upgrade. Hilux spruce up I HAVE heard a whisper that an upgrade of the SR5 Hilux will be available in November, with 17-inch wheels as standard. Not sure what else will change. Can you confirm if this is true as I am looking to upgrade my 2005 SR5 model. Murray Trapnell, email There is a minor change coming in October and, yes, an alloy wheel change is part of the minor update -- but only for the SR5 diesel. Quotes vital I RECENTLY travelled to Northern Australia towing a van with my Hyundai Terracan Diesel, with which I am very happy. While in a large town or city in the Northern Territory, I arranged for an oil change and filter at the local dealership. The bill I received came to $405. When questioned, the dealer said that no other work was performed and that the price was normal. Upon my return to Melbourne I obtained a quote from my local dealer on an intermediate service, which includes new oil and filter as well as a full-vehicle inspection. It was $252. I guess this was a costly warning to ask for a quote at all times, particularly in isolated places. Gary Mahoney, email A good lesson for us all to follow, Gary. Always ask for a quote before any work is done on your vehicle. Miles of smiles I ENJOY the Carsguide immensely, but I really hate the reference to spare wheels as spare tyres. Do we have to fit a serviceable spare tyre to our wheel that just had a flat? Also, that annoying word revs , which to me is more easily understood as RPM. Geeez, I m only 70 and been driving since I was 15, but don t tell anyone about that. As a matter of interest, our Victorian Premier John Brumby warned the public on the news about not trying to drive through three feet of water , so that means he still thinks Imperial. Please bring back horsepower and MPH and MPG . I am happy with wheels measured in inches and engines in cubic inches, but I can live with CC for engines. Anyone else out there with me? Rudy Schaper, Croydon Hills Sorry, but time passes and metric is the current standard. As for RPM, the Carsguide team is against any three-letter acronym. And a spare wheel is useless without a spare tyre. Sportage versus ix35 I WOULD appreciate your comparison/ opinion between the Hyundai ix35 and the new Kia Sportage. It will be used for city driving -- with the weekly trip to Gippsland -- so we want something with a bit of room for carrying goods. Also, are the diesel options good performers or is there not enough time for reliability and performance as yet? Ian O'Regan, email The cars are identical under the skin, so go for the one you prefer on the styling. The Kia has a small advantage as its suspension has been tweaked for Australian roads and drivers. The turbo-diesels drive well, but you must do more than 25,000km a year to make the sums work on the extra costs. 2017170-100918 FINANCE AVAILABLE PAYMENTS TO SUIT $12990 HOLDEN RODEO 2X4 F/TRAY 5 speed, air conditioning, power steering, 2.4 litre.
