The Mercury Cars Guide : October 2nd 2010
Saturday, October 2, 2010 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---11 MOTOR News Anniversary takes on an air of safety NUTS &BOLTS GRUNT: The Aston Martin One-77 has a 560kW V12 engine. THE airbag is 30 years old this month, with Mercedes-Benz planning a major celebration for the life-saving technology it introduced on its S-Class flagship in 1980. American statistics show airbags have saved more than 28,000 lives in the US alone. Mascot menace A SLOW-MOVING bonnet mascot has triggered a recall at Bentley involving 1436 of its Arnage range, including the Brooklands. Only 18 cars are affected in Australia, with repairs planned so the Flying-B bonnet mascot retracts quickly enough that it is not a danger to pedestrians. BMW's fast move NO sooner has BMW ended production of its 6-Series coupe than the new model is unveiled for the Paris Motor Show. The new car --- which will be followed by a convertible --- shares a lot of its look with the latest 3 Series coupe and has lost its heavy boot bulge and other pumped-out body bits. Superpowers ASTON Martin is claiming major bragging rights for its upcoming One-77 supercar, which it says has the world's most-powered naturally aspirated engine. The 7.3-litre V12 churns out 560kW of power and 750Nm of torque. Pure excitement THE Australian run-out of the current BMW M3 is being led by a limited-edition model called the Pure Edition. It comes with special 19-inch alloy wheels, a chrome-and-black gloss grille, dark chrome exhaust tips and anthracite cloth trim with leather inserts, priced from $135,000 and $148,300 for the manual coupe and convertible. Honey I shrunk the car THE world's best model car company, Amalgym Fine Model Cars in Britain, has done its magic on the Ferrari 458 Italia with a one- eighth scale replica that is almost a shrunken copy of the original. It took more than 3500 hours to build the model prototype, and production cars --- in a limited run of just 199 copies --- are now available for $5830 from Ferrari shops and dealerships. VW's Mexican wave DEMAND in the United States has convinced Volkswagen to built an all-new engine factory in Mexico as part of its drive to become the world's best-selling car brand by 2018. The factory in Silao is costing more than $600 million and will provide engines for factories in Puebla in Mexico and Chattanooga in the US from 2013. Plugging along nicely FIVE Australian groups will be part of a worldwide plug-in hybrid trial being run by Toyota. Government and business are the most likely choices to run the plug-in Prius cars, which are updated from the regular showroom model with a lithium- ion battery pack and a more sophisticated hybrid system. Gamers smash grand prix record T HE Suzuka grand prix circuit lap record has been eclipsed by 20 seconds --- on PlayStation3. Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel claimed the record in a virtual car that features in the next generation of Gran Turismo 5. The X1 Prototype car is a joint venture between the producers of the popular computer game and Aussie Mark Webber's Formula One team. The project threw out the F1 rule book to produce the fastest race car possible for its Gran Turismo 5 game which will be released in Australia on November 4. The X1 features aerodynamics by Red Bull Racing chief technical officer Adrian Newey. ''We all have a dream about pushing the boundaries where the performance of the car and the experience of the driver take precedence over the rules,'' Newey says. ''This is the inspiration that brought Red Bull Racing and Polyphony together. ''And as a result the X1 Prototype is dynamite to drive.'' Kazunori Yamauchi, the president of Gran Turismo producers Polyphony Digital, says the X1 is a ''what-if'' dream. ''We want to inspire racing fans and the industry alike by exploring the realm of possibilities for the future of motorsports,'' Yamauchi says. Gran Turismo has been used to launch the BMW 1 Series and it debuted the Nissan GT-R before the real version was made public.
