John 0429 183 851 0 Good cars about to hit our market, but electric-powered bicycles and scooters have been available for a couple of years. So far sales are slow but as A Nope electric scooter and bi- cycle importer Harry Samson of Brisbane pointed out, the growth will be exponential. ‘‘In 1997 they sold 98,000 electric bikes and scooters in China. Last year it was 25 million and they’re sending bike shops broke,’’ he said. Theyhavenot yet caught the public’s imagination but that could all change next week with the running of the world’s first all-electric grand prix fea- turing the world’s fastest elec- tric bikes. The Time Trials Xtreme Grand Prix (TTXGP) will be held on June 12 on the Isle of Man TT circuit with machines capable of exceeding 200 km/h. More than 50 teams have entered the grand prix. With a colour photo and 4 lines (extra lines $2) you’re much more likely to attract the right buyer. ...it’s that easy! PARK YOUR MOTORBIKE HERE AND WATCH ITGO ing electric-powered bikes have a good choice of bicycles, but only a few scooters and no motorcycles. There are several bicycle importers with electric bikes, electric folding bikes that fit in your car boot and even conver- sion kits that turn a regular bike into an electric-powered machine. One such conversion kit is the eLation system from Queensland which was se- lected to appear on ABC’s The New Inventors in 2006. Chinese electric bike importer Michael Solomon of Eco Wheels said some two-car families were getting rid of one of their cars to buy an electric bike. ‘‘Mum is keeping the family car to pickupthe kidsanddothe family chores, while dad is using the bike as a commuter,’’ he said. SILENT two-wheel revolution is com- ing. Electric cars are Electric bikes are good for about 30 km/h with a range of about 50 kilometres. You can ride them without a licence and you can even take them on public transport because they have no combustible fuel. If you have a motorcycle licence or you live in Queens- land or Western Australia and have an open car licence, then you can also ride an electric ‘‘moped’’ scooter with a speed limited to 50 km/h. But the pickings are slim. Honda is considering an electric scooter or small bike for Australia, but is yet to announce anything. None of the other maufacturers has yet confirmed electric motorcycles for Australia, but all seem to have them on their drawing boards. The only electric scooters on the market are three Nope scooters and two from EVT which are limited to 50 km/h and the Vectrix maxi-scooter. The Nope J50 Retro costs $3100 and looks just like a Vespa. There is also the more modern-looking J50 Neo at $2950andaNopeJ70comingin about four months which will be capable of 60 km/h. Importer Harry Samson of ECO Motion in Brisbane said he was selling them to people who couldn’t afford to buy or run a second car. He called on governments to support electric scooters with incentives. ‘‘There should be a rebate like solar panels. They could also make them cheaper to register, or take off the stamp or import duty, or designate sepicific scooter lanes. Some- thing that will encourage peo- ple to use them,’’ he said. The EVT 168 ($4290) and 4000e ($3995) electric scooters use an electric hub motor that is part of the rear wheel. Power comes from four sealed batteries which will charge overnight from a do- mestic 240v power point. These 50 km/h scooters are restricted from expressways and highways. However, there is no such restriction on the biggest elec- tric scooter on our market, the Vectrix maxi scooter, which costs $13,950 and requires a motorcycle licence to ride. It uses a nickel metal hy- dride (NiMH) battery pack with an estimated life of up to 10 years based on 8000 kilo- metres a year. Vectrix Scooters Australia managing director Charles Mann said they had been operating for about 18 months and sold about 150 in the past year. ‘‘We do a lot more rentals than sales,’’ he said. The Vectrix is made in Poland and features Italian componentry and American electronics. MARK HINCHLIFFE Going small saves planet YOU don’t have to go electric to be green. Most scooters and small capacity bikes use less fuel than the smallest car and spew out far less greenhouses gases. Theyalso have benefits such as easier parking and cause less traffic con- gestion. One of the biggest scooter retailers in Aus- tralia, Joe D’Ercole, said he had sold more than 10,000 scooters in his ca- reer. ‘‘This saves about 20,000 tonnes a year in greenhouse gas emis- sions,’’ he said. 6.30am – Find safer car. 3.00am –Next generation comes into the world.
