The fuel-injected RM-Z250 S should arrive here later this year, but Suzuki Australia marketing controller Eoin Black said they could notnameadate or price yet. ‘‘There’s no word yet from us,’’ he said. The fuel-injected RM-Z250 fea- tures a battery-less fuel system with43mmthrottle-body, progres- sive throttle linkage and 16-bit computer derived from its larger capacity sibling. The cam timing has been re- vised, intake ports uprated and the connecting rod strengthened to boost maximum engine speed to 13,500rpm. Suzuki says the fuel-injected engine has more power and torque. The RM-Z250 also gets a rede- signed twin-spar aluminium alloy frame with a thicker lower frame rail wall, shallower side rails, and a more rigid swingarm. Mark Hinchliffe It also has new footpegs, an aluminium fuel tank, black num- ber boards and changes to the front spring and damping rate and the rear linkage. Meanwhile, the 2010 model RM- Z450 has also been updated. Engine upgrades include a new cylinder head, piston, crankshaft, throttle body, cam shafts and valve springs. The fuel-injection system has a reversed throttle valve move- ment, directing mist away from the valve to produce more power, and quicker throttle response. Suzuki has also developed a more rigid, twin-spar aluminium frame,newsubframe, linkage and rear swingarm, and revised spring and damping rate settings. The 47mm inverted front forks are fully adjustable for rebound and compression settings, while the rear shock absorber offers fully adjustable rebound, com- pression and pre-load settings. The new RM-Z450 also features a new radiator and electrical upgrades including ECU revi- sions, while the price has risen $100 to $11,490. Australian Chad Reed this year switched to Suzuki and rode to second in the American and World Supercross. He leads the American motocross series. Black said having the dual world and American champion racing the RM-Z450 was a ‘‘mas- sive endorsement for our off road riding line-up’’. Victory launched its first shop in Melbourne in September. Since then shops have opened in Brisbane, Mackay, Newcastle, Darwin and Auckland, but Alexan- der is careful to vet both the site and staff before hanging up the Victory shingle. ‘‘It’s all about positioning and doing justice to the brand,’’ Mr Alexander says. ‘‘That extends from where we site our stores to how they are fitted out. ‘‘The bikes speak for them- selves — they’re a premium product and our market research shows people are looking for a premium bike with an individual style. ‘‘We’re meeting our sales pro- jectionsnowandwecouldn’t have conceivably chosen a worse time to launch a premium product, so I’m encouraged that we’ve read the market correctly.’’ Mr Alexander commissioned exhaustive market research be- fore launching the brand here and he’s intent on cementing Victory as a premium cruiser option. ‘‘We’re not taking aim directly at Harley Davidson, though that’s the obvious comparison,’’ he ac- knowledges. ‘‘We’re after riders who want quality, want something that’s relatively unique and know what they want from their bikes.’’ If what you want is paintwork to sink in and enough chrome to double as a solar furnace — and you can afford $20,000-$40,000 — then you’re on the path to Victory. Models range from the low- riding Vegas, Hammer muscle bike and Kingpin cruisers to the futuristic Vision tourers. Arlen and Cory Ness have had a hand with the design work — and you can buy Ness Signature models. Power is provided by a 1634cc V-twin with 63kW and 144Nm, or a stroked 1730cc version good for 71kW and 148Nm. National sales manager Peter Harvey says personalising the bike is a big part of the experi- ence, be it a chromed set of handgrips,newexhaust pipes or a touring seat and saddle panniers. ‘‘We’re dealing with a market that is happy to invest in making their bike their own,’’ he says. ‘‘There’s no ‘type’ of person whois a Victory owner, other than they have an interest in motor- cycles. ‘‘The range is relatively small, but there’s a bike to appeal to most buyers.’’ Unlike most new brands, Vic- tory also doesn’t issues over mechanical durability.
