The Mercury Cars Guide : September 5th 2009
4--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, September 5, 2009 New compact on the catwalk STYLE: The sexy 2010 Citroen DS3 two-door hatch. USING the legendary ''DS'' model name, Citroen has lifted the wraps off the DS3 ahead of its global debut at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show. The DS3's quirky styling, float- ing roof, ''shark fin'' B-pillar and inset LED lights in the front bumper scream the type of design individuality made popular by the Mini. It will also inspire a new range of up-market small cars from Citroen that will include a DS4 and DS5. However, the Citroen will also be aimed at the Alfa Romeo MiTo and Fiat 500 when it goes on sale locally in the second half of next year. The DS3 is 8mm longer, 27mm wider and 34mm higher than the Mini Clubman, but shares the British car's engaging looks. Prices and specifications are yet to be finalised but buyers can expect a range opener around $30,000. Like the Mini, buyers will be able to personalise their small Citroens. The company has a huge colour palette for the roof and rearview mirrors, as well as the choice of alloy wheel designs and interior trims. Despite its compact size, the designers have tried to maximised cabin space. The dashboard is set high to increase leg room and the slim- back seats and upright wagon-style rear free up room in the back. The car has a 285-litre boot with a 60/40 split-fold rear seat. In Europe, five Euro V-compliant engines will be avail- able, two HDI turbo-diesels and three petrol engines driving the front wheels. The HDi engines develop 68kW and 82kW while the petrol models include a 70kW and 90kW VTi four, as well as a 112kW turbo petrol. The engines will be mated to five-speed and six-speed manuals with automatics to follow. In a veiled poke at the Mini, Citroen Australia general manager Miles Williams says the DS3 repre- sents a fresh approach to small cars. ''Existing models in this new prestige sub-sector have put the emphasis on performance and lack that flexibility and versatility that DS3 provides,'' he says. Williams says buyer trends have changed in recent years as more and more motorists downsize. ''Many motorists are now down- sizing their cars into market sec- tors that have in the past been almost the exclusive preserve of cheap, basic cars,'' he says. Williams says aggressive Euro- pean tax regimes based on emis- sions and fuel economy are driving the change. He believes the DS3 meets the criteria of a new class of buyer who thinks small but wants the crea- ture comforts of a larger car. French carmaker Citroen is mimicking the Mini mantra with its first luxury supermini.
