The Mercury Cars Guide : September 26th 2009
Saturday, September 26, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---7 A belter of a decision email@example.com with GRAHAM SMITH QMY daughter's 1997 Ford Festiva 1.3 manual recently went in for its 100,000km service and I was advised that the timing belt needed to be changed. Is this correct, and if so, what should it cost? Stephen Harrington Templestowe, Vic AYes, it is good advice. Belts are typically changed at about four years or 100,000km, whichever comes first, and in your case both milestones are up. As for cost, expect it to be $200 to $400. QI WANT to convert my 2004 Ford to gas and I would like to know the best system or brands for the vehicle. I believe the best system is a ''vapour'' system, and I have been advised an Italian system, Zavoli, is the recommended choice. I live in the lower southeast of South Australia and am con- cerned about availability/accessibility for installation and after-sales service. Can you please steer me in the right direction and/or make any other recommendations? Richard email AVapour or the later liquid injection systems are the ones to go for today. Virtually all the systems on the market today are made in Italy, and most of the well-known brands on the market are Italian systems adapted for use here. Try the well-proven and respected brands, such as Impco, Eurogas and Tartarini etc. Contact the system manu- facturers and ask for the installer nearest you, then consult them to see if you feel comfortable dealing with them. QCOULD you give me some advice on buying a second-hand four-wheel drive for towing a double horse float with one horse? The float weighs 1800kg without the horse on board. I was looking at a 2005 Ford Territory automatic that has done 53,000km, or should I look at a Toyota Prado or LandCruiser? Robyn Morgan email AYou have to think of how much the float will weigh with a horse and any gear. My guess is that it will be more than 2.5 tonnes. I would rule out the Territory. You would have to upgrade the transmission cooling to handle the weight. Go for the Prado or LandCruiser, or perhaps think of the Jeep Grand Cherokee that will tow 3.0 tonnes. QI WAS wondering if there would be catastrophic damage to the motor if the cam-timing belt on my 1993 Subaru L series broke. I know that some engines only stop if the belt breaks, but others are badly damaged. And I would like to know what category my Subaru is in. James Russell email ASubaru's advice is that if the belt broke there would be no damage. It is a free- spinning engine, so if the belt lets go, the engine will simply stop.
