The Mercury Cars Guide : November 14th 2009
Saturday, November 14, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---15 Get on board for an extremely wild ride MUMBO AND MACHO: The Wildtrak acquits itself well on and off-road. Just in case a five- metre long light- commercial doesn t stand out, Ford has gone a bit overboard with the new Ranger flagship. By Stuart Martin FORD'S all-diesel LCV range is topped by the Wildtrak, a dual-cab ex- trovert that is powered by a three-litre variable- geometry turbodiesel, with either a five-speed manual or (in the case of the test beast) a five- speed auto, with the dial- operated shift on-the-fly 4WD system also on board. The Wildtrak Crew Cab more than stands out from the stan- dard Ranger line-up, with nu- merous body add-ons like roof and tray rails, side steps, an integrated sports bar and the no- cost option roller shutter rear tray cover. The side mirrors also have integrated LED indicators incor- porated into the housing for further differentiation. The Wildtrak has anti-lock brakes and a limited slip differ- ential, but unfortunately there's no stability control, although the safety features list does include dual front and side airbags. The rear tray is covered and lockable via the roller-shutter, but the dropdown part of the tailgate can't be locked without a convoluted re-arrangement of the straps within --- once the straps are on the rear tailgate, the rear load area is secured with the lockable shutter, but it's far from ideal. With a load on the ride, quality is good, but you'll always want to have something in the tray, as the wrong road can have the Wildtrak living up to the first half of its name. During its time in the Cars- guide garage it spent time on the open road, suburbia and some rougher country in the state's mid-north, acquitting itself well across the broad range of sealed and unsealed terrain. The modern-day light- commercial driver is a spoilt brat compared to what their predecessors had to put up with --- power steering, a leather- wrapped steering wheel, alcantara-trimmed front seats, carpet mats, a 6CD in-dash stacker sound system with MP3 compatibility and auxiliary in- put jack, side-steps, power win- dows and mirrors, remote cen- tral locking, on-the-fly 4WD shift (no manual front hubs here) and cruise control (a dealer-fit op- tion) --- although there's only tilt-adjustable steering on offer. One of the things that some will love and others (the author included) won't is the ''multi- meter'', which shows tempera- tures inside and out (although the accuracy is doubtful) as well as tilt-angles and direction of travel with a compass. The rear seat is a bit better than some in the class, with a backrest that isn't completely upright. The door aperture will catch some broader shoulders (some- thing not unique to the Ranger, I might add) and the centre passenger only gets a lap seat- belt. Where the Wildtrak gets away with it is in the powertrain, with the mumbo to match the macho, with the three-litre turbodiesel cranking out 115kW and 380Nm. It's not leaving anyone in any doubt that it's a diesel --- the new Triton is certainly quieter and just as grunty --- but the Ford's in-gear shove is among the best in the segment, which is one of the most competitive for a num- ber of reasons. It's currently being driven by tax rebates and the improve- ments in the LCV models' fea- tures and road manners. More are being used as all- rounders than ever before, tow- ing trailers and lugging tools during the week and towing toys and carting rugrats during the weekends. small torque Ford Ranger Wildtrak Price: from $48,990.
