The Mercury Cars Guide : November 21st 2009
2--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, November 21, 2009 Compacts prove value SURPRISING: The Ford Fiesta is remarkably sporty and fun to drive. ALL-ROUNDER: The Mazda3 has led the charge for Mazda this year. The field is set for the 2009 CarsGuide Car of the Year judging. The final five are here today, completing the top 10 who will compete to succeed the Ford Falcon G6E as the winner of Australia's most prestigious annual car contest. Paul Gover reports THE last five cars in the CarsGuide Car of the Year contest are more every- day than last week's exo- tics, which were led by the Nissan GT-R and Toyota Prius, but each has a strong case, from the Ford Fiesta to the Volkswagen Golf. They are the compacts, too, with most fitting into the small-car class, which has become the most- popular and competitive group in Australian showrooms since the slump in large-car sales. They are much more affordable than the first five, with the Fiesta in showrooms from $15,450 and even the Golf starting at $25,990. Judging time is when the con- tenders are matched against their top-10 rivals, but also against their individual class competitors. And they are also evaluated against the same sort of strict judging standards set by show- room shoppers on everything from value and safety to comfort, per- formance, fuel economy and ef- ficiency. Nothing escapes the focus of the CarsGuide COTY judges, a nine-member panel who are the only coast-to-coast crew to evalu- ated the best of the best for 2009. And they have more than 150 years of combined experience on the job. The 2009 CarsGuide Car of the Year champion will be an- nounced next week, but here are the final five and the reasons they made the field for the COTY con- test: FORD FIESTA (Price: from $16,450 Engine: 1.6-litre four, twin-overhead camshafts Output: 88kW/6000 revs, 152Nm/4050revs, 6.1L/100km, 143g/km) THE baby of the Ford family faces the compact heroes of Japan and Korea but comes up trumps in the light-car class. It looks good, is efficient, but --- best of all --- is surprisingly sporty and enjoyable to drive. A good reason to look beyond a Corolla. www.thecarmart.com.au 6211 0566 14 Derwent Park Rd, Derwent Park David Strang 0404 724 986 Mark Patterson 0417 025 936 Todd Jackson 0419 514 956 Bob Wansbrough 0419 312 051(Finance) Easy on-site finance available 14871jayne 96 Ford Festiva WB GLi 1.3lt manual, p/s, a/c, 121,000km, ideal first car.
