The Mercury Cars Guide : December 12th 2009
14--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, December 12, 2009 A Triumph that's streets ahead of the competition NO JARRING: The 2009 Triumph Street Triple R gives a smooth ride thanks to its monoshock unit. TIGHT TURN: The Quickshifter accessory makes cornering easy. What a difference an R makes. Mark Hinchcliffe reports TRIUMPH'S naked Street Triple was a darling of a bike when it was re- leased at the bargain- basement $11,990 list price. Prices remain unchanged a cou- ple of years later. This year Triumph added an R to the Street Triple's name as well as the brakes and almost identical suspension from its Daytona supersports bike for an extra $1500. If you were to buy these items separately, it would cost about twice that, so it's still a bargain. And what a triple treat it is with superb handling and braking, together with powerful perform- ance from the 675cc Daytona en- gine. I loved the Street Triple when I first rode it and even though I was concerned about the lack of sus- pension adjustment, I felt it was right for my weight. Even without any adjustment the new forks feel so much better. The fork tubes are slightly longer than on the Daytona with recalibrated spring rates and valves, and out back there is a monoshock unit with a piggyback reservoir. What this means is that the bike feels plusher over the sharp hits of potholed urban roads, yet with a progressive feel that removes dive under hard braking. And oh what braking. The radial-mount Nissin brake cali- pers and radial-pump master cyl- inder provide instant bite but plenty of feel in the lever. The R also gets wide, tapered, handlebars from Magura and a 5mm taller seat height, thanks to the longer fork tubes. But it doesn't end there. Triumph's website includes a clever ''configurator'' which al- lows buyers to pick the colour of their bike and add accessories, seeing how much they cost and what the bike will look like. The Street Triple R has 35 accessories to choose from includ- ing exhaust and muffler systems, carbon fibre bling, a gel seat, bellypan, luggage, immobiliser and the new smoked flyscreen that attaches to the accessory colour- matched flyscreens. But the most desirable accessory is the ''plug and play'' Quickshifter which is fitted to the Daytona and can also be fitted to the standard Street Triple. The Quickshifter is simple to fit and allows riders to make clutchless upshifts while keeping the throttle wide open. This makes the traffic-light derby a win every time. It's also excellent for short- shifting in technical sections of road or track where there is a quick change of direction or short straights. And it grabs pedestrian atten- tion as you snick through the changes like a Formula One driver. Even when you're not trying to impress the crowd, the clutchless shift makes for effortless commut- ing. Triumph has also just released Arrow ''rear set'' foot pegs for the Street Triple range for track use. The pegs are not only beautiful in black and red anodised CNC- machined billet aluminium with Arrow and Triumph branding, but also practical for track days by improving ground clearance. They can quickly be adjusted up to 20mm from the standard setting and include provision for the rear brake switch. small torque Triumph Street Triple R Price: $13,490 Engine: 675cc liquid-cooled, 12-valve, DOHC, fuel-injected, in-line 3-cylinder Power: 79kW @ 11,700rpm Torque: 69Nm @ 9100rpm Transmission: 6-speed, wet multi-plate clutch Wheels: 17 x 3.5in alloys Tyres: 120/70 ZR 17 (front), 180/55 ZR 17 (rear) Suspension: Kayaba 41mm upside-down forks with adjustable preload, rebound and compression damping (front); Kayaba monoshock with piggyback reservoir adjustable for preload, rebound and compression damping (rear) Brakes: twin 308mm floating discs, Nissin 4-piston radial calipers (front); 220mm disc, Nissin single-piston calliper (rear) Dimensions (mm): 2030 (l), 731 (w), 1250 (h), 805 (seat), 1390 (wheelbase) Dry weight: 167kg Fuel tank: 17.4 litres Colours: matte graphite, matte orange Accessories (fitted): Arrow rear seat pegs $750, silencers $762.71, Quickshifter $549, anodised gold top yoke nut $33.02 Motor Cycles AGILITY BUG 125cc scooter, 1434km, top box, 9 mths reg, immaculate as new condition $2,200.
