Isuzu's D-Max manages to avoid double trouble VALUE FOR MONEY: The Isuzu D-Max ute has recorded phenomenal fuel efficiency. wheels Clone wars are starting to hit the light commercial vehicle market. Neil Dowling looks at how one soldier is faring WHEN you found out that the best girl you ever met had an identical twin, would you hesitate before select- ing? And what would sway you one way? Though rarely a predicament in the commercial vehicle market, it is being played out increasingly now with spirited badge engineer- ing exercises by European van makers. But despite appearances, it is not the case with the Isuzu D-Max ute and the Holden Colorado ute, which have mostly identical com- ponents. Surprisingly, they are made in different factories in Thailand. All this comes as an even greater surprise given Glass's Guide --- the global automotive researcher and analyst --- just ranked the Isuzu D-Max ute above the Colorado for resale value. The D-Max, which has been in Australia for barely two years, recorded a 90.5 per cent resale value for a turbo-diesel model at 33,000km, to exceed the resale of rival Toyota Hilux (90.4 per cent) and the Holden Colorado at 87.2 per cent. The D-Max is also winning at the pump. Adventurer Hans Thol- strup has recorded 1716.3km on one tank of diesel driving an Isuzu ute 4x2 dual cab from Queens- land's Far North to Innamincka in South Australia. That's a Prius- swamping 4.428 litres/100km. He did it again recently, taking the dual-cab ute towing a 5m powerboat weighing more than one tonne through Queensland. The 76-litre diesel tank lasted 967km for an average of 7.85l/100km. For 10 years, Isuzu has been sitting on top of the world's ute market. It is, said Isuzu Ute Australia managing director Hito- shi Kono, ''the only place where Toyota isn't''. ''We wanted to get into the ute market by ourselves, but we were owned by GM and we had to follow their lead,'' he said. Things changed two years ago for Isuzu --- Japan's oldest vehicle ma- ker --- when GM started its fire sale. ''It gave us the freedom to produce the D-Max and to expand our presence in other markets, such as Australia, in 2008,'' Kono said. GM's carve-up saw its Suzuki stake go to Volkswagen and its small Subaru holding to Toyota, while the third Asian stake held by GM, Isuzu, went to Mitsubishi Corporation. It is an odd fit, but Kono said the only segment in which the two companies competed are utes. ''We are very separate,'' he said. ''We sit under the Mitsubishi Corporation umbrella, but we op- erate totally independent.'' Out from under GM's skirt, Isuzu Ute thought the future was looking bright, but hadn't figured on 2009. ''We had a difficult start in 2009,'' Kono said. The saviour was the tax benefit for vehicles in Australia, pushing Isuzu up the sales ladder to record 3566 sales. In isolation, for a fledgling im- porter, it is a commendable effort. But to gauge the size of the market, look across at Toyota and see its 38,457 unit sales for the same period. ''We have 3.7 per cent market share, Toyota has 32 per cent,'' Kono said. ''But Australia rep- resents 10 per cent of Isuzu's exports from its factories in Thailand, making it the third most important market outside of Thailand for the company.'' To Kono, one important feature of the Isuzu Ute sales is the high percentage of private sales. Last year, 58 per cent of sales were to private buyers. This com- pares with Toyota Hilux at 17 per cent and the national ute segment average of 22 per cent. ''Our customers are totally differ- ent to other brands,'' Kono said. ''Our ute is the best of the fleet --- it doesn't break down, it carries a full load, it is fuel-efficient. But unless we knock on doors, customers won't come to us.'' The answer is to expand its fleet representation and its dealer net- work. Kono said Isuzu had 62 dealers and 12 satellite service centres in Australia, but was aiming for 70 dealers by the end of the year. new models OCCASIONAL seating for an extra two people is now available in the rear of Isuzu's space-cab ute --- one of a handful of model freshen-ups for 2010. The ute-exclusive, single-engine manufacturer has made minor changes to its 15-model range, expanding the availability of automatic transmission and cruise control, while putting more aggression into its face with a toothy grille. Automatic is now available on the SX mid-spec 4WD and 2WD dual-cab utes, and cruise is standard on all SXs. However, it is not available on cab-chassis variants because these have a longer wheelbase than the utes. Option up the auto to the 2WD SX dual cab and it includes the 4WD's high-lift suspension that has 225mm of ground clearance, wheel arch flares and 16-inch wheels with 245/70 tyres. The jump seats --- which fold down or up to maximise cargo room when not carrying passengers --- adds an extra $700, though the price includes cruise control. Prices for the D-Max range between $25,100 and $44,500, the latter for a 4WD turbo-diesel dual- cab automatic.
