The Mercury Cars Guide : September 18th 2010
14--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, September 18, 2010 CREATURE Comforts Modern motorists get connected IN PASSING FEATURES, comfort and space have always been staple requirements for new car buyers and modern technology has done plenty to put more in new cars. The top end of town is where the cutting-edge features and technology first breaks cover and it's the big pricetags that help pay for it. The buzzwords of the modern motor vehicle seem to be ''interface'' and ''connectivity''. One of the newer breed with modern infotainment is Ford. The Belgian-built Mondeo Titanium's centre stack and multi-function steering controls the bulk of the car's system. Ford says it was modelled on the control units for mobile phones and the company calls it the Human Machine Interface so you can answer your phone by using voice control buttons on the wheel while the sound system takes tunes from an MP3 player, or a USB stick. The new Peugeot 3008 range is a prime example of a new-age vehicle --- a cross between an SUV, a hatchback and a family car has high levels of connectivity. The sound system is clever, switching the strongest frequency of a particular radio station, with Bluetooth connectivity for the audio and phone systems. The 3008 also has screens built into the front headrestraints, with cordless headphones and jacks for associated equipment and built-in sun-blinds in the door to keep the rays away from the occupants and the screens. For those looking for serious child-carting abilities and features, the Chrysler Grand Voyager seven-seater is a mobile lounge-room. The passengers are kept in considerable comfort in the tri-zone climate control, seat heaters in the first and second rows of seats, while the second and third rows --- accessible by means of automatic electric sliding door --- have retractable window shades. The third unfolds at the touch of a button and the rear passenger compartment is littered with unmatched levels of storage, which the seats can also fold into if required. The infotainment system in the flagship Limited model has a 16.5 cm touch-screen, satellite navigation and a USB-compatible 30GB hard drive, voice-activation and Bluetooth phone link. Rear passengers get two DVD screens, infrared wireless headphones and a remote control, as well as input jacks. But move up to the pointy end of the pricelist and you'll see what's coming in the family cars of the future. The Range Rover Vogue, a vehicle some see as the ultimate on and off-road machine, has rear screens that can work independently --- one can watch a DVD while the other rear passenger can watch digital TV. Occupants in the Range Rover also get power-adjustable seats front and rear, with heating (and cooling for the front only), with top-quality USB/MP3 compatible Harmon Kardon digital surround sound. Thanks to some clever pixels in the Autobiography model, even the front passenger can watch the centre screen while the driver is not distracted --- from the right- hand side of the Rangie only audio systems or satellite navigation are visible. The Lexus LS range has brought plenty to the showrooms, with the 460 and 600hL packed with features that spoil the passengers. Four-zone climate control with 14 vents, with sensors for air and body temperatures, electrically-operated side and rear window shades --- certain LS models can even be fitted with heated, cooled, electrically-adjustable rear seats and an ''Ottoman'' footrest. The soundtrack is supplied by a 19-speaker Mark Levinson sound system but there's also a drop-down rear DVD player that works with infra-red headphones --- all the systems can be controlled from the control panel within the rear armrest.
