The Mercury Cars Guide : October 23rd 2010
20--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, October 23, 2010 DUCATI Updates A Ducati kind of cruiser TWO WHEELS ON THE WAY: First shipments of the 1198SP are due in December POCKET ROCKET: The smaller Ducati 848 superbike has an 104kW EVO model. I TALIAN sportsbike company Ducati has finally revealed its first cruiser. But the Ducati Diavel is as far as you can get from a standard Harley-style cruiser. Diavel will make its world debut at the EICMA International Motorcycle Show in Milan, November 2-7, but Ducati has released one image ahead of time showing a slender, upright naked bike. The name is pronounced dee-ah-vel and means ''devil'' in the Italian dialect spoken in Bologna where the Ducati factory is. Ducati Australia spokesperson Alison Fraser says the bike is ''its own category''. ''We will not place it within any current Ducati family models,'' she says. ''It is unique in its styling and it is not confined to any current single range. It has the appeal of a cruiser but is much more aggressive and with true Ducati technology and power. An easy motorcycle that can be used by novice and experienced riders, it will be a bike that ads to the Ducati family, rather than slots into it. ''It will be extremely manoeuvrable with an easy seat height ensuring riders are comfortable and confident on the road.'' Australia would probably see first deliveries ''trickling in'' in the first quarter of next year, Fraser said. ''Forward orders by customers will be fulfilled, and so they will start to be visible in showrooms slightly after this time.'' Ducati says the bike will feature ABS, Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Riding Modes. It will be powered by the superbike-derived Testastretta 11 engine and will weigh 207kg. Meanwhile, Ducati unveiled some of its 2011 range at the Intermot motorcycle show in Cologne earlier this month. The 1198 superbike comes with Ducati Traction Control, Ducati Data Analyser and a new Ducati Quick Shift. Ducati is also introducing an SP version over the previous S version. It adds DTC, DQS, DDA, Ohlins TTX rear suspension, slipper clutch and aluminium fuel tank to the Ohlins front suspension, forged Marchesini wheels and carbon fibre components. The price for the 1198SP has not been announced with shipments due in December. The smaller 848 superbike, with a 104kW EVO model, Brembo monobloc callipers and steering damper, has started to arrive at $24,990, the same as the current 848. Ducati's naked Monster range gets more comfort and safety with the entry level 696 featuring new 43mm Marzocchi forks, 20mm higher handlebars in matte chrome and a new rear sub-frame designed for the optional passenger grab-rail kit. It comes in new colour schemes of ''dark stealth'' and ''stone white''. The new Monster 796 also has Marzocchi forks. For 2011, the Streetfighter gets a new white colour scheme, and the S model comes in red with red frame or diamond black with racing black frame, both with black wheels. A black radiator cover on all versions completes the aesthetic updates. Fraser says she has not been advised of Streetfighter and Monster availability, pricing or colours but says the Monster 796 has arrived at $15,990. Warren Lee, boss of NF Importers, which brings in Ducati, says Australian Ducati ownership is in the world's top three as a percentage of licensed riders. Italy is always the top. The Australia road motorcycle market was down 10 per cent from 20,982 to 18,894 in the first half of this year, but Ducati, which only sells road bikes, was down 24.1 per cent from 860 to 653. Lee says this could be because of a trend away from sportsbikes. ''I suppose this is because of the crackdown on speed and people are looking for more versatility,'' he says. ''One of the few sections to see any growth has been in adventure bikes.'' Lee says Ducati will reap a sales benefit from its new Multistrada 1200 adventure bike. ''If you can only own one bike, you need something with versatility like the Multistrada, '' he says. Lee believes the market will reboun when consumer confidence returns. ''Everyone wants to buy a new bike and is capable of buying a new bike, but it's purely a confidence thing,'' he says. ''The passion for motorcycles is still there. So, if confidence comes back it should pick up quickly. Sales of spare parts and services are high because people are holding on to their bikes longer.''
