The Mercury Cars Guide : November 19th 2011
06 08 14 FIRST DRIVE We know it's a Polo in all its essentials but what about its non-essentials? We drive Audi's chic and quick A1 Sport YOUR CALL The Carsguide crew has deliberated on its COTY picks. The People's Choice Awards are for your selections COVER STORY If you don't want to do all your dough when if comes to selling or trading your car, here's what you need to know 02 on the web Italy's workhorse THE economies of southern Europe fall like dominoes. Decades of indolence and the collective inability of its population to accept the necessity of performing the occasional spot of work have sunk Greece. Spain is tottering. Italy is . . . well, Italy. Unlike its soon-to-be- former EU neighbours, however, Italy has Ferrari. Consider that in Australia alone, sales of the prancing pony marque have lifted by 17 per cent through the first nine months of 2011, reflecting a global trend that has lifted the Italian supercar company s year-to-date revenue by 18.9 per cent and its profit by 10.9 per cent. Consider further that a certain citizen of this country paid in the region of $1 million for a unique matte black GTO, and we can see Italy riding to a Ferrari-led recovery. There are a bunch of upgrades but the downside on the 2012 model year is a price that blows out a little from $168,800 to $170,800. FUTURE'S HERE NOW A tiny electric city car swept the awards at the inaugural running of the RAC Future Car Challenge in Britain. The T.27, the work of innovative Formula One designer Gordon Murray, averaged 0.81L/100km and 37g/km of CO2. The challenge is run from Brighton to London, the reverse of the course taken for the annual historic car celebration in the UK over the route of the original ''Emancipation Run'' in 1896. WORLD COTY The Volkswagen Up city car and McLaren's MP4-12C supercar are late additions for judging in the 2012 World Car of the Year awards. Ten finalists, in categories from overall champion to best performance car, will be announced in January. Winners are named at the New York Auto Show in April. SEB v SCHU Sebastian Loeb has overtaken Michael Schumacher as the most successful FIA world champion. The French star clinched his eighth World Rally Championship with Citroen in RallyGB when his closest rival, Miko Hirvonen of Ford, retired. This is one more world crown than Schumacher collected with Benetton and Ferrari in Formula One. BACK TO NATURE Fans of four-wheel driving, camping, boating and fishing will have to amend their 2012 diaries. The new date for the National 4x4 and Outdoors Show, Fishing and Boating Expo is August 24-26 at the Melbourne Showgrounds.
